Free Music Review: Spawn Of The Wretched And Defiled

This is one of my favorite Cannibal Corpse albums in my collection. I bought it on the day of its release along with Deicide's Scars Of The Crucifix and the re-issue of Disincarnate's Dreams Of The Carrion Kind. I have never had a problem getting anything Cannibal Corpse but getting this album or better yet, getting the uncensored version digipack was a pain in the a--. I went to an FYE/Spec's store and they only had the censored version. I asked a clerk why the store didn't have it and he said that they could order it but they didn't carry it. They only carried the censored version. This was very unfortunate because they carry all Cannibal Corpse releases and I always see them at their store locations but not the uncensored version of The Wretched Spawn. It's probably because of the cover but in any case, it is a travesty and a violation of the first amendment. After this, I went to the Virgin Megastore nearby and they didn't have the uncensored version either but this was a different case because it was about availablity instead of censorship. So I go on to another FYE/Spec's location and it was the same deal as the first one and since it was the day of the release of the album and many fans were buying it, I didn't want to feel left out. So I went on and bought the censored version. I did enjoy the album a whole lot like with every album that Cannibal Corpse releases but it was a major shame in the way that things turned out. So I tried looking for the uncensored in other FYE/Spec's locations and it was the same deal until I finally went back to the Virgin Megastore that I went before only this time, I found the uncensored digipack. I brought 2 copies as a measure of revenge.
I'm sorry if I have caused any discomfort by telling this story but I'm doing this to call many Cannibal Corpse fans and extreme metal fans in general to arms. I don't know for sure but I believe that this problem with stores like FYE/Spec's was the reason for the release of The Wretched Spawn/Worm Infeasted EP boxset. At least fans can get the uncensored copy but measures still need to be taken by fans as well as the band and their record label in order to prevent this from ever happening again. This is just another major wake-up call and it is something that many of you Cannibal brothers and sisters should take heed.
Now for my review. This is the 10th studio album by the band and it comes in a digipack which features the CD album itself and a DVD which is the making of the album. So everything here will satisfy every Cannibal Corpse desire and a whole lot more. Lets review everything one by one.
1. The Album - With this album, it is another new direction for the band. They take things to another new level. The band still retains all of the basic elements that have made them who they are as a brutal death metal force but to a more progressive, dynamic and creative level. In other words, they are becoming better musicians because what they do musically makes them stand almost superior over the average gore death metal band because they are the only ones who can do what they do, how they do it and no one does it better. It's just that simple and this keeps being the case album by album and it certainly is the case here without a doubt. So with this album, there is plenty of heaviness, brutality, speed, slow and medium-paced songs, aggression, solos, bass, blast beats and killer vocals as well as innovative passages, distortions and a whole lot of unbelievable suprises. So nothing predictable here. As for the material, the direction of it is almost like Bloodthirst but more progressive and innovative but with the sinister vibe of Vile. The key word here is suprise. So you're just going to have to listen to it and see for yourself but all I can say is prepare to be slain. Some of the best songs here are Severed Head Stoning, Psychotic Precision, Decency Defied, Frantic Disembowelment, The Wretched Spawn, Festering In The Crypt, Nothing Left To Mutilate and They Deserve To Die. So buy it and experience some heavy, brutal, wretched death metal curtesy of the spawns known as Cannibal Corpse. Enjoy the wretchedness.
2. The DVD - The DVD is something extra for the true Corpse fans to enjoy. It features a whole of awesome things but it mainly focuses on the making of the album. So some of the things seen here are interviews with the band members, the band practicing Frantic Disembowelment, Rotted Body Landside and Festering In The Crypt, Jack playing accustic country, George cooking and working out, Pat and Alex out shooting, the guy's own private rooms and much more. Now I don't know if this edition of the album with the CD and DVD is a limited edition but just in case it is, I strongly recommend on buying this edition of the album now. Buy 2, 3 or 4 if you have to but just don't miss out.
