Free Music Notes for In the Land of Grey & PinkFree Music Review: Wonderfully unforgettable... Hit: 5 Stars
So, why does an album sound so incredibly fresh & alive well over thirty years after its release? Well, if there was an easy answer everybody would be doing it, but sometimes things just work... and Caravan's masterpiece does just that. First time through its bizarre, often childish lyrics may leave you feeling that you've dropped into a whimsical Edward Lear-esque hippy-fest... but careful because it'll get to you, and once it does you'll be hooked. Why? Well in addition to being infused with catchy melodies, perfectly metered lyrics, excellent playing, clever arrangements, and a highly distinctive feeling of pastoral "Englishness", there's something running through it all that elevates it from an interesting, relatively obscure slice of early 70's folk-jazz-rock into a "classic". Don't ask me what but it's different, unforgettable and above all timeless.
Free Music Review: An album of epic proportions! Hit: 5 Stars
I recall a review that described this album as "faultless" - this does not do it justice. This album is an epic with its flagship opus "Nine Feet Underground" providing some of the best keyboards (Dave Sinclair), Bass (cousin Richard) and drums (Richard Coughlan) you will ever hear. Jimmy Hastings' flute and sax add the finishing touches together with Pye Hastings' vocals and conservative guitar work. The album, with its whimsical lyrics is a reflection of the era but 33 years on it is still a classic. If I had to be critical, I would probably have left out "Love to Love You" but its almost relief to have a break from clasic track after classic track. If you are going to have one progressive rock album in your collection, it has to be either this or Camel's "Moonmadness" - Dont ask me to choose!
Free Music Review: A Time Machine Back to my Teens Hit: 5 Stars
For any Brit who was in his or her teens or twenties in the late 60's/early 70's and who had a discerning ear, this album probably rates very highly. The two tracks that "bring it all back again" for me are the title track and "Golf Girl." The "Canterbury Sound", with its combination of whimsy and serious commitment to art, stands out from the banality of much of the era's popular culture. Beyond Hastings' and Sinclair's whimsy are engaging melodies that are replete with interesting time signatures supported by subtle harmony. Although their eponymous first album has a raw creativeness that perhaps surpasses this album, "Gray and Pink" is perhaps the Caravan album I would choose if I were only allowed one on my desert island. This is a must have album for afficianados of the "Canterbury Sound."
Free Music Review: Happy, Nostalgic Prog Hit: 5 Stars
There are not too many reviews for this one, therefore I had to weigh in since this album is so good.
I took a chance with this album, not knowing what to expect, and I'm very happy with it. I've only listened to it twice, so I'll give my first impressions. The vocalist sounds like Ringo Starr, which is appropriate because the music and lyrics are fanciful and playful. The music takes you back to a happier and more optimistic time, the early 70s. If you work in a creative field, this album will inspire creativity. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of progressive rock or music from this era. I can't believe I went for so many years without hearing this. The radio stations have been really oppressive for not playing music like this. Take a chance, get this album and enlighten yourself.
Free Music Review: piano Hit: 5 Stars
Utterly amazing!!!
Even if you dont like some of the tracks on this album, you have to honour, stand speechless, faint or even die when you hear the piano solo on the title track Land Of Grey And Pink. It is THAT good. It creeps in, floats, shimmers, bows and gracefully tiptoes out giving way to a distorted organ. And you have to love the brrrrlllluurrrbbbbrrrrrbbbbb (the noice you make to babies) lead vocal toward the end.
Golf Girl is of similar structure (those power acoustic chords are amazing) without the atmosphere - more of a comic song.
I have the big double best of Caravan CD and recently got this (just for Land Of Grey And Pink as it happens) and cannot stop playing it.
FANTASTIC!!!
