Free Music Notes for In the Land of Grey & PinkFree Music Review: Land of great music and pleasure Hit: 5 Stars
Light English progressive rock but mind you it does get heavy on some parts particularly on the epic nine feet underground. The line-up are master musicians they may not be banging their hands but their music hits you strongly. It's like a fairy tale with rocking minstrels.
Free Music Review: have to agree with the review two below, Hit: 5 Stars
but the extra tracks more than make up for it. That's all, this is a cool album, read other reviews for more, I can't be bothered to write a proper review, go ahead, give me a bad review thingy...
Free Music Review: The start of the light Cantebury Genre, but H&TN are better Hit: 4 Stars
Well this album, expecially the 22 minute suite (too much long and sometimes boring)"Nine feet underground", has characterized the light Canterbury sound of a fascinating epoque for a long time (listen also to "Moonmadness" by Camel and, above all, to Rousseau "Retreat", this german band being inspired by first Camel and classic light Canterbury very much, sometimes improving the easy canterburian sound). But actually if you listen to tracks like "Lunar sea" and "the spirit of the water" by Camel or the albums by Hatfield and the north, these latter being more experimental, you can skip "In the land of..." by Caravan!! However, despite of their importance, this work isn't always inpired (listen to the forgettable "Love to love you" or to "Golf girl", where the crepuscolar tones of Sinclair's voice are boring!!); and for this reason the right rate should be 3 stars (I add 1 star because this work is influential)Recommended to the fans of Light Canterbury, but before check "Moonmadness" by Camel and Rousseau "Retreat"
Free Music Review: If you like drum and bass ... Hit: 4 Stars
Well , not exactly 'drum and bass' in modern terminology , but this album is characterised by the excellent drumming of Coughlan - should have seen him live - , and solid bass of Sinclair combining to give music that can only best be appreciated if you tend to crank up the bass on the hifi with some decent speakers. After having listened to it for the past thirty years , I still don't get tired of it , though it must be said some of the musical progression is quite predictable and slow-moving. Pye Hastings is a little McCartney(!) like . He can write really good stuff , but his tendency to whimsy should not be encouraged - hence you get singalong tracks like "Love to Love You" ... Caravan really changed my musical outlook when I first heard "If I could do it all over again ..." - so radically different from the pop charts. Land of Grey and Pink consolidated my view of the band but after "Girls who grow plump ... " I lost interest. However , this work stands up well to the test of time and I would recommend it to anyone. SO refreshing to hear lyrics NOT being sung in a mid-Atlantic accent.
Free Music Review: OK, but not much more than so Hit: 4 Stars
I like Caravan, I like stuff like Camel too. But, they don't leave you too impressed, not even bothered, it doesn't engrave itself within. Caravan makes nice little pittoresque and undisturbing prog pieces. That's about it. They are neat, cute, good, smart, musically interesting - but not too daring or substantial. And not essential.
I recall in the 70s when a neighbour girl came home after her flute lessons and played small pieces together with her brother on piano and then their mum used to drum along with bongos and tambourine. It was nice, really, but as a musical experience it just makes you long for the real thing. Yngwie Malmstrom is not a heavy metal artist, he's just a guy who loves to play the guitar, especially the scales.
Caravan's Land of Grey & Pink is needed, I don't deny that, get the album to your collection. But as for Caravan generally speaking you might just proceed to Hatfield and the North at once even though I would go a step further to Egg and the like.
It's ok, I don't expect you to agree.
