Free Music Notes for Comme si de rien n'étaitFree Music Review: Not Bruni's best, but still magnificent Hit: 5 Stars
Ms Bruni is a superbly gifted chanteuse.
There's no bad song on this album (actually, not one on any of her three albums).
The lyrics are ironic, insightful, mature and clever. The arrangements are gorgeous, and they make this a truly "folk" album.
In "Ma Jeunesse" and "Je Suis Une Enfant" Bruni jokes about her age and revels in the memory of childhood.
"Salut Marin" is a perfect folk waltz, dedicated to her late brother Virginio.
"Ta Tienne", which is the best song on the album in my opinion, is reminiscent of "L'Excessive" and "Le Toi Du Moi": it's just as fun and cheerful.
"Il Vecchio E Il Bambino" was originally a political song (by Francesco Guccini), but it fits the mood of the album, despite its genuinely peculiar meaning.
Other amazing tracks are her cover of "You Belong To Me", "L'antilope" and "Notre Grand Amour Est Mort" (those who say Bruni's singing voice is flimsy had better listen to this track, and to the whole album).
I still think "Quelqu'un M'a Dit", her debut album, is better than this last effort of hers -- still, "Comme Si De Rien N'Etait" is the best album I've bought this year, so far.
Free Music Review: A Wonderful Surprise Hit: 5 Stars
I had heard so many diverging views on Carla's singing talent, that I didn't know quite what to expect. I was most pleasantly surprised - she is very talented - the lyrics are beautiful - many of which she wrote herself - and the musical arrangements led me to listen to this CD over and over. To think that in France this poor woman was ripped to shreds from both sides of the political spectrum when she started dating Nicolas Sarkozy. To stop even more controversy she will not make any stage appearances (just TV shows), and donate the proceeds of the CD to a charity. However this album is not selling well in France - her traditional audience is of the left - and they feel she betrayed them by marying Sarkozy. The people of the right don't like her political views, and don't think she fits the mold for what a traditional French 1st lady should be like. I wish her all the best in her artistic career.
Free Music Review: Sultry alto, and also First Lady of France! Hit: 5 Stars
All but two of the songs on this CD are in French (one of the remaining songs is in English, and one is in Italian). If you take the time to do the translation, you will find that the French seem to have no compunction about certain subjects English-speaking audiences find a bit uncomfortable. Carla Bruni reinforces this idea, for example comparing certain female body parts to a chrysanthemum.
Even if you don't bother to do the translation, you'll hear a sultry woman's voice, singing with feeling and verve. Although the songs are all similar (including the English "You Belong To Me" and the Italian "Il Vecchio e il Bambino"), they have an easy-listening, smooth-jazz feel that makes nice background music.
This is not a "deep" set; rather, it's a set of songs by a woman who clearly has feeling for the words she's singing, and is happy to share those moods with the rest of us.
Free Music Review: love it as much as her first CD Hit: 5 Stars
Her music is just sweet, bluesy, dreamy and so relaxing- It makes you drift off and slow down, which is something you can't get enough of in this hectic day and age. Plus, even my wild 3 year-old boy approves of it and totally mellows out. I would recommend it and buy it for my friends:-)
Free Music Review: Worth getting and supporting Hit: 5 Stars
I was surprised by the richness and textures of this CD which I got after watching a documentary on Ms. Bruni. I highly recommend it. I play it weekly. Great production values, she is a master melody-creator/artist.
