Free Music Notes for Take a Joke AmericaFree Music Review: Nothing Special Hit: 1 Stars
Carlos Mencia admonishs his audience to "Take a Joke America" in his new comedy album. The crowd at The Comedy Works in Denver (where the show was recorded) certainly seems to take him to heart. Mencia's high energy, fast moving show was punctuated by several applause breaks. Moreover, the comic's timing and rhythm were good. Mencia had a good set and I am sure the majority of the crowd left the club happy that night. So, Mencia did his job and gave them what they came for. With that said, I did not find this CD particularly funny. Mencia sets the tone of his show right from the start. With his use of the word "beaner" we know that we are headed for a show about racial and ethnic stereotypes. However, Mencia's material offers little of the necessary fresh perspective for such a pervasive topic among comics. Chris Rock comes to mind as one having a much more unique view on race relations and intra-race comparisons (especially on his first two albums). The other topics tackled by Mencia include friendship, dating, Clinton, American women, and advertising. Like any good comic, Mencia seems to have passion for his material. But, there is nothing new and/or different here. (I did like one of his lines about the Taco Bell dog) I would rather listen to Carlin, Hicks, or, again, Rock for their social commentary. This show is not for the easily offended as Mencia works dirty; all of his bits are laced with profanity (which has a place in stand up, I mention this only as a warning). This CD is different in that Mencia banters with the crowd during this show a bit more than most headliners that I've seen or heard. Obviously, this CD was not for me. However, you should probably listen to the samples provided by Amazon.com and decide for yourself, whether or not to give Carlos Mencia a shot.
Free Music Review: Ned Holness sucks something fierce Hit: 1 Stars
Do you think the powers of PC would allow a white guy to get away with having a show like Mind of Mencia? Nein mein herr!
Why am I speaking German? Because Carlos aka Ned Holness is actually half German and half Central American, not Mexican. Oh yeah, almost all of his material is lifted from superior comedians suchs as Chris Rock, George Lopez, Dave Chapelle...and *gasp! Jeff Foxworthy! How uncool is it for a hip "Mexican" "comedian" to rip off a mildly funny redneck comedian?
Fans of "Carlos", due to their lack of taste and intelligence, will proudly say "Don't playa hate man. Carlos is just telling it like it is! Its your fault if you can't take his edgy un-PC humor!". Newsflash: un-PC humor isn't always funny, and it is far from new. Its been around since the days of Lenny Bruce and Red Fox. Nearly all of Carlos's jokes are racially-based. He attacks whites, blacks, asians, his own "people"(though he's not Mexican) and he has particular venom for Arab Americans in a way that is not funny but totally uncalled for. Why focus so much on race jokes? Is that all you can think of? Its the same as when 95% of comedians suck because they tell the same overmilked sex jokes over and over.
Want good comedians who have something to say? George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy(before the tranny incident) and the almighty Bill Hicks. The fact that this jackass has his own Comedy Central causes me more concern for the state of human civilization than the fact that Paris Hilton is famous.
Free Music Review: A circle has more edge then this guy Hit: 1 Stars
Carlos Mencia is one edgy comedian; I know this because he won't stop telling everyone about it. I've never been a huge fan of Carlos and after listening to this CD my opinion of him hasn't really changed. He claims to be an edgy comedian and that's his problem, if he was truly edgy he wouldn't have to constantly remind us in his CD/DVD titles, his show on Comedy Central, radio/TV interviews and most importantly during his own act. Sure he talks about very racial and socially taboo subjects but so does Chris Rock, George Lopez, David Cross, George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Richard Pryor (RIP) and countless other comedians and they are much better at it. In fact they are so good at it Mr. Mencia often feels to need to use some of these comedian's jokes in his own act, a true sign of respect for those who came before them; at least that's what Carlos seems to think or maybe he's just plagiarizing because he's not funny enough to come up with descent material. Needless to say I was not laughing while listening to this CD and it wasn't because I find Carlos to mean spirited, or crass, or politically incorrect; it's because everything he talks about that's supposed to be so gosh darn edgy has already been said by other people who are much more funny then he is. There is so much good stand up comedy out there people don't waste your time and money on this joke stealing, self aggrandizing hack.
Free Music Review: internalized racism----not really funny.... Hit: 1 Stars
i got this as a gift and it was not at all funny...he uses pretty tired material and most of his stuff is played out
i think you would think it was funny if you had half a brain.
Yes, Mexicans do labor for white people, yes we do talk funny. He just uses observation and screams a lot with no social critique or commentary that true geniuses use (Dave Chappelle, George Lopez, Lalo Alcaraz, Bill Hicks and George Carlin)and in fact upholds a lot of the stale stereotypes that rich, upper class people have for poor Mexicans like me.
I guess this would be funny if you had the same level of self-hate as he does but its not funny when you are a Mexican like me.
But the material is adult uses a lot of "cringe humor" like talking about sex with his sister (I'm sure we've all seen the Comedy Central commercial) and describes his mom as a "uterus with a head" yikes!
Anyway the sad part is that he is not Mexican but in fact half Honduran and half German (born Ned Holness)?
Buy at your own caution....
Free Music Review: Weak Minded Joke Thief Hit: 1 Stars
I'll admit that I stole that description from Joe Rogan's website. I saw Mencia before I knew he lied and stole jokes and all that, and I thought his comedy was pretty run-of-the-mill racial junk, nothing special. After reading Rogan's blog item here, http://www.joerogan.net/main.php?archives=1&article=44170, I grew to hate "Carlos Mencia". For the record, avoid Denis Leary's No Cure for Cancer as he ripped off Bill Hicks for at least ten minutes of his set.
