Free Music Review: CinderSimon Proves Herself, Once And For All!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've long felt Carly Simon was rock's Cinderella. While evil step-mother Joni Mitchell and step-sisters Carole King and Linda Ronstadt garnered the lion's share of the attention and critical acclaim, Simon plugged away, figuratively sweeping out the hearth with underappreciated classic after little-noticed gem. That's why it's so cool to finally have a complete, concise collection that proves, once and for all, that Simon deserves the glass slipper. Covering thirty years and all four of her major label affiliations (as well as an off single or album cut here and there), ANTHOLOGY showcases Simon's strong beginnings as well as her more varied later material. Opening up Disc One is the classic "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." It's hard to believe a twenty-six year old could compose such a thoughtful, observant ("My father sits with no lights on/His cigarette glows in the dark") ode to independence and individuality. What's even more amazing is how well it has aged; it's proven itself to be timeless. The same could be said for "Anticipation".....it's SO much more than the theme song to a catsup ad! With it's powerhouse double-dose wallop of longing and uncertainty, wrapped in expectant nervousness, it still delivers the emotional punch and charm it first did over 30 years ago. A true winner! Other high points on the first disc include the country-flavored doo-wop of "One More Time", the aching sense of disappointment and unfulfilled dreams in "Legend In Your Own Time", the simple love and delicacy of "Julie Through The Glass", the all-too-real feelings of regret and hard-learned lessons that pour out of "We Have No Secrets" and the hip-shaking rock of "Vengeance." Then there's "Older Sister." All of us born farther down the sibling line can identify with this toe-tapping, finger-popper, with it's barbershopper-tinged vocals and sardonic lyrics("She turns everybody's heads/While I wear her last year's threads/With patches and stitches/And a turned up hem"). And we can't forget "In Times When My Head." Probably one of Simon's most complete compositions, it boasts a soaring, heart-tugging vocal and graphic, bare-bone lyrics. This mini-movie musical vividly captures the hurt and devastation that is caused by infidelity, as well as the lack of future trust that may arise, resulting in continuing (and misplaced) doubts. One of Simon's Top Five songs....ever! There's also "You Belong To Me." Anyone who thinks of this as a Doobie Brothers song is sadly mistaken; with it's swaying arrangement and breathy vocals, this is true Simon, pure and simple. Disc One closes with two tracks from 1980's brilliant COME UPSTAIRS, an album that found Simon moving away from her folk-rock roots into harder, more adventurous territory. The title track was a pulsating, lust-filled dance number, all full of gutteral vocals, hand claps and hyper synths and drum machines. It's a genre that you intially don't think should work for Simon, but she pulls it off here (as well as later) with ease. "Jesse" is a brilliant Top 15 single that could have easily sailed into the Top Five if Warner Brothers had just given it a little bit more of a push. We've all been here - that one love affair that we know we should let go of, but just can't. We know it's wrong("Annie, keep reminding me/That he cut out my heart/Like a paper doll/Sally, tell me once again/How he set me up/Just to see me fall"), but we can't help it.....before we know it, we're "gone again!" Fresh flowers, cold wine, clean sheets and cologne, indeed! Disc Two is the more adventurous of the pair. It opens with the standard "Not A Day Goes By." This classic, along with "My Romance," which is featured later on, is a prime example of just how Simon has been short-changed over the years. She did the standards thing before anyone - Ronstadt, Tennille, etc. - and she did it just as well, if not better (certainly with the most heart-felt emotion), but that fact has never been acknowledged. And that's a shame. Next up is "Why", a percolating Chic-produced dance track that was really only a hit in Europe, but is still totally infectious twenty years later! I'm also glad they included "Come Back Home." When SPOILED GIRL came out in 1985, I was sure this romance-drenched mid-tempo rocker with the snaking sax line that just drips yearning, want and love could have been a huge hit. Released in the hey-day of MTV, I was convinced a World War II-themed video, complete with Simon doing her best Veronica Lake, could have vaulted this undiscovered gem to the top of the charts. Oh, well! COMING AROUND AGAIN is represented by four cuts, including my two favorites from the album, "Give Me All Night" and "All I Want Is You." Similarly themed, these two songs are pop perfection. "Better Not Tell Her" is another special cut. With it's atmospheric vibe and flamenco guitar, it's a perfect example of what an original Carly Simon is. Then there's the touching beauty of "Love Of My Life" and the ultimate wisdom of "Scar", a song (bravely) detailing Simon's bout with breast cancer. Closing out the set is a live version of "Touched By The Sun." Sung in a voice that is as strong, if not stronger, than when she started out over 30 years ago, Simon soars. She also captures the fortitude, honesty and passion that has permeated her career. Now, do I think anything's missing? Sure, we all will! Personally, I would have loved to have seen the chugging "Nightowl" from NO SECRETS, the gut-wrenching "In Pain" from COME UPSTAIRS and the "Should-Have-Been-A-Hit" "Born To Break My Heart" from LETTERS NEVER SENT included. But that's beside the point....this baby's the real deal, just the way it is! So......buy ANTHOLOGY and have a twirl around the ballroom floor with Carly Simon. Her glass slippers fit ever so nicely.

Inevitably described as leggy or toothy, Carly Simon emerged in the early '70s as a kind of finishing-school sex symbol. She's the daughter of publisher Richard Simon, as in Simon and Schuster, and her very personal early songs were informed with a familiarity and uneasiness with the trappings of wealth and prominence. The finely detailed "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" best captures the young Simon. At a time when her counterculture peers were singing about buildings going up in flames, 26-year-old Carly focused on the glow from her brooding father's cigarette as she slipped by his study. "That's the Way" was the first of a string of top-10 hits Simon produced through the '70s and into the '80s. Anthology includes the lot of them--from "Anticipation" through "You're So Vain" past "Let the River Run" (better known as the theme from Working Girl). Far surpassing the 10-song Elektra retrospective, The Best of Carly Simon, this two-disc, 40-song collection spans three decades in the career of an artist who clearly believes that confession is good for the soul. --Steven Stolder
