Free Music Review: Carley Simons Soulful Late 70's Classic

I'm not entirely sure why but this qualifies as the very first review I've done for a Carly Simon album ever. I've actually had several of her albums on cassette over the years but recently been picking some of them up on CD. This is one of the albums that most interested me because of the pedigree of the artists involved:Cornell Dupree,Steve Gadd,Richard Tee,Hamish Stewart,Joe Farrell and bassist Will Lee all have a great deal of involvement in the flavor of this music. And by that I mean that this album showcases a potent mixture of folksie singer-songwriter folk/soul and jazz funk styled grooves. Outside of someone such as Carole King perhaps Carly Simon has the destinction of being among the most R&B oriented of all the famous 70's singer-songwriters and never exactly stepped away from that element at any point in her career. But this is the album that tends to be the most famous for emphaszing this sound.
Now the a good handful of these songs emphasize the typically softer sound of Simon such as the acoustic folky stylings of the title track,"Back Down To Earth","Devoted To You" and the closer "For Old Times Sake". There are also other slower type songs such as "Haunting","You're The One" and "In A Small Moment" that have a stronger jazzy pop flavoring to them than folk with the stronger keyboards and orchestrations-pointing to the more arranged songs she's pursue in the years to come. Now it's on the funkier numbers that the album really achieves it's full flower. Of course there's the big hit "You Belong To Me",a funk Michael McDonald groove that Carly's voice and style throws in for all it's worth. The latin styled dance groove "Da Bat (Fly In Me Face)" finds her paired with husband James Taylor with backup vocals from Luther Vandross on a song that recall's Paul Simon's latin funk/soul excursions earlier in the same decade. She also flies into full groove mode on the smooth ride of the Crusaders-like disco-funk of "Tranquilllo (Melt My Heart)" as well as the stomping blues drenched funk of "One Man Woman".
Throughout this album the good mix of mellow and upbeat soulfulness and grooves will keep one listening and/or grooving throughout the album to Carly's thoughtful but accessible observations illustrated in each of these songs. Now this album wasn't something that just came out of nowhere. Throughout the mid 70's Carly had been gradually developing a more soulful feeling and funky groove in her music and songwriting. And in the end this album would up being the fruit of that passion. Because she was also working with a producer with a good deal of experiene in terms of dealing with the production of R&B,funk and soul in all it's many shades in the person of Arif Mardin that also made a difference. Some some might still call this music soft rock to the very end. Some might call it jazzy-pop-funk-soul or whatever but the music is some of the strongest of Carly's career,which is full of strong material over the stretch of time and if your just getting into Carly Simon this might not be a bad early choice for one of her albums to pick up because it showcases so many shades of her personality.
