Free Music Notes for This Kind of Love (Dig)Free Music Review: A classic artist in top form Hit: 5 Stars
How many CD's do you buy in one year that have more than 2 or 3 songs that you really enjoy? I listen to a lot of music, I spend much money in music (because I love it), but in the last 5 years, I have only bought 2 CD's with more than 2 songs that I keep listening to a lot.
"This Kind of Love" is a great exception to the rule. There are at least 6 truly beautiful songs, and the other ones (except the rap song, which is not my style) are very, very pleasant. The lyrics are well crafted and reveal a wide variety of emotions. There are a variety of rythms here, with a slight Brazilian predominance. The musicians are top notch.
My top selections: 1) Hold out your heart 2) So many people to love 3) This kind of love 4) In my dreams 5) Too soon to say goodbye 6) Hola soleil.
I understand that everybody may have a different taste in music, but if you read the "expert" reviews, or give this CD a try, there is a great probability that you will consider it among the best in the last few years.
Carly has one more time shown that she is a top singer-songwriter, and hopefully the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will finally take notice.
Free Music Review: That's the way I've always heard it should be. Hit: 5 Stars
The love described on This Kind of Love is all about nuance, suggestion, and the hints of sadness that make the stumbling on love that much more intense. After three detours to standards (again!), children's songs, and the demo-quality The Bedroom Tapes (recorded during her recovery from breast cancer), Simon is definitively back in her singer-songwriter form, having authored or co-authored 10 of these 13 songs that explore love therough the eyes, hands, and heart of a woman wizened but never whipped. With Jimmy Webb's seductive arrangements, Simon beckons the listener into a world of sunny celebration, moonlit beaches, fluttering curtains, and island dreams. And just when you're willing to follow her contralto anywhere, Simon reminds us of the ephemeral nature of it all, as she closes the album with a poignant essay on an immigrant child-care worker ("Sangre Dolce"), and her touching tribute to her late friend and writer Art Buchwald ("Too Soon to Say Goodbye"). From her no-secrets start some three dozen years ago, Simon remains one of America's finest purveyors of pop romance. And that's the way I've always heard it should be.
Free Music Review: People Say A Lot When They Don't Understand Hit: 5 Stars
As one reviewer remarked, Carly Simon is not going to give us another 'No Secrets','Playing Possum' or 'Boys in The Trees". That was another space in time for us and for her. But this intimate look at where she is now is quite remarkable. In Fact, I would venture to say she sounds more vibrant and energized than most all her contemporaries. Always chronically under-rated and often over-looked, Simon has never really gotten the recognition she has deserved and unfortunately, it again seems to be the case with this latest work. Still, this work is indicative of a musician of great accomplishment.
Simon is such an icon and is behind so many great songs it is easy to dismiss this work after a few listens as 'not as great'. But you have all her trademarks here, unforgetable melodies and smart, concise lyrics. Listeners need to keep in mind, Simon has never been one to follow trends and her career has been so sporatic because it is easy to expect a certain style from her and have her sail off in a complete different direction with each new release. This is no exception, but it deserves many listens and an open mind.
Free Music Review: Very sexy music to go with the cover photo Hit: 5 Stars
I really like the choice of the Brazillian flare; about time given the 50th anniversary of Bossa. The title "This Kind of Love", very sexy summer sunset opener and sets the pace for some really beautifull creations, "Hold Out Your Heart", to "Too soon to say goodbye" are sweet solefull heartbreakers. "Island" and "When we're together" (kids Ben and Sally creations) are again very Bossa consistent with the album. "Sangre Dolce" should be in a movie seen immediately, very powerful image. "People say a Lot"???wow, where did that come from, but very cool.
Carly's baritone voice fits this genre perfectly. There has never been, and will never be, any one who will ever sound the same. Thank God for something that's not fake!
I love this album, cut for cut. I hope this gets the coverage it deserves--which is always a problem for this artist who seems to live in morbid fear of ever stepping unto a large, or even medium stage. Its amazing that anyone knows her, given I would guess fewer than 100 performances in 35years!
Go for it Carly---this deserves it!
Free Music Review: Wonderfully Intimate, Subtle Lyrics and Musically Expressive Sound Hit: 5 Stars
This is a really nice comeback. The Latin rhythms and textures are inspired, and Carly weaves them beautifully with her own signature style.
One of my favorites is "They Just Want You to Be There," about raising kids:
"They don't care if you comb your hair. They just want you to be there.
They don't care if you stay upstairs. They just care that you're there.
They don't get that your striving to be someone and you're not sure
just how well you will fare. They just want you to be there."
Another one, "People Say A Lot When They Want the Job," has hair-raising tales of betrayal
by personal assistants! It's good that Simon felt free to share.
The detail is extremely precise in this song. Rewarding to fans who care.
I bought this CD months ago and still enjoy listening to various selections from the album as they come up on my morning walk. You will find humorous, witty and sometimes romantic lyrics; and rich emotion in the sound.
