Free Music Notes for Carnival (1961 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Great entertainment Hit: 5 Stars
Carnival was an award-winning musical. I have an original-issue copy of the LP (signed by the star - ok, I just had to gloat a bit - now back to your regularly-scheduled review, already in progress). I have enjoyed this show's enchanting score since I first heard it. The CD issue is superb. The tracks all sound fresh and the balance between the orchestra and the voices is perfect and has well-defined left and right channels. All the cast members sing very well with especial kudos to Jerry Orbach who sang as himself and also as four puppets (male and female). Anna Maria Alberghetti has a a sweet, light soprano that gives Lili the innocence the role requires. Kaye Ballard is another standout. The disc has two tracks from the score, both reprises, that are not on the LP. It also has nine bonus tracks of demos sung by the composer/lyricist, Bob Merril and individual performances of four of the songs, including "Magic, Magic" which was not recorded for the cast album. This is a very entertaining CD that I never get tired of listening to.
Free Music Review: Fantastic Music!! Hit: 5 Stars
I am listening to this Musical at the present time, and the more I listen the more I like it....I had orchestral arrangements of Carnival in my collection, but only recently purchased the CD of the Show...as everyone indicates, the music is something to behold, and the voices of all of the leads are in rare form...Kaye Ballard, Jerry Orbach, James Mitchell (from the movie Band Wagon and is still with us at the age of almost 88 years) and the wonderful Anna Maria Alberghetti...Bob Merril's excerpts also add to the enjoyment of the CD and he even comments on the proceedings from time to time on the extras...as to how one song leads into another..I wish there would be a revival of this, even by our local Muny Opera..I don't think it has been done in years..."Her Face", "Love Makes the World Go Round" "Mira" "Beautiful Candy" etc... not a loser in the bunch..please go out and get this won as it is a winner all the way!
Free Music Review: BROADWAY AT IT'S BEST Hit: 5 Stars
Carnival was the 2nd broadway show I saw. It was splendid. Wonderful cast, beautiful scenery and lighting, and a wonderful score. There aren't too many broadway shows that can boast such a beautiful score. Lovely ballads, lively songs like Beautiful Candy and of course Love Makes The World Go Round. The original cast album on MGM records was a disaster. The sound was terrible with a lot of hiss and the songs were not in the origial sequence of the show. The new cd is splendid. They cleaned up most of the hiss as best as they can and now the score is in its origianl sequence. They added a couple of bonus tracks that i felt were not needed, but who cares. Just listen to this great show with great songs and terrific talent. The whole cast is splendid. A must to have if you love show music. I have the origianl London cast on vinyl and hope some day it will be re-issused on cd. It is also very good.
Free Music Review: One of the last of the old-style tuneful musicals Hit: 5 Stars
Coming at the end of the golden age of American musicals of the 40s and 50s, Carnival is a tuneful throwback by one of the most-overlooked Broadway composer/lyricists Bob Merrill. It also contains one of the most tuneful show songs of all time - the best Richard Rodgers waltz Richard Rodgers never wrote - "Beautiful Candy". Disney has held the Broadway revival rights for the past couple of years but decided that the story might too dark to bring to Broadway under the Disney banner...but they are having another look at the current City Center Encores! revival in New York City (Thurs. Feb. 7-Sunday Feb. 10, 2002)...a semi-staged production which lacks the spectacular carnival-atmosphere staging of the original Broadway show but still keeps the charm of the music intact and uses imaginative direction & choreography to substitute for big sets.
Free Music Review: Vocal prowess, poignant music amazing combination Hit: 5 Stars
This recording is amazing! The sheer emotion combined with the already moving music makes for a rollercoaster ride for the emotions. While listening to Anna Maria Alberghetti sweetly sing "Love Makes the World Go 'Round", I found myself almost in tears. My tears turned to giggles after listening to the comical "Yum Ticky" and "The Rich" and my giggles blossomed into full-stomach laughs while listening to Kaye Ballard's gutsy, bravado-filled lament in "Humming." If you are a fan of classic musicals, don't overlook this diamond in the rough. It's an absolutely astounding score with talented vocalists to back it up.
