Free Music Review: The Hypnotic Beauty Of Carolyn Dawn Johnson Hit: 4 Stars
She began as a songwriter only, with the hit "Single White Female." Over time the Alberta-born singer-writer acquired the studio break needed and did harmony vocal work with Martina McBride and then released her own single, "Georgia." It was the success of "Georgia" that thus launched Carolyn Dawn Johnson on the road that temporarily culminates with her first long-player.I often compare modern country acts with Michael Nesmith, but with Carolyn Dawn Johnson the comparison is not just a bad habit on my part, for she shares with ol' Woolhat the qualities of being a singer-songwriter with a distinctive vocal style - albiet of a much higher pitch than Nesmith's - and she also displays the kind of innovative production ideas that are a Nez trademark. This is displayed in the middle three tracks of the long player, "Complicated", "I Don't Want You To Go", and "You Are." When one thinks of country-pop, one thinks of guitars, pedal steel, and cheesy fiddle thrown in for good measure. And while such are available here, it is the Beatle-esque bass (combining that flavor with the flavor of bassists John London and Jerry Yester) that drives these numbers as well as other numbers such as the title track at the end. Johnson also double-tracks her vocals - just as Mike Nesmith "faked" Micky Dolenz on his double-tracks, so Johnson leaves the impression of Martina McBride dueting with her on "You Are" and elsewhere. Johnson's upward-rocketing vocal at the end of "You Are" is downright scary before the song downshifts the the low and slow fade. Of course more conventional country-pop is deftly deployed in "Georgia" and "Love Is Always Worth The Ache," with its humorous "Mama Rocker" fuzztone-flavored guitar licks. If there is a flaw with CDJ's music, it is that the tracks on the album are rather downbeat, dealing with leaving someone, trying to find love, and in "Complicated" being unable to decide if she loves someone or not. This is best displayed in the closing title track, an "Angels In Waiting" flavored ballad for the loss of a loved one. The sadness that pervades the album leaves the listener moved very nicely - quite deeply, in fact - but a sense of optimism and positivity is still missed. I suspect she will correct this minor nit picked in a subsequent long player. For now, though, CDJ can be proud of the hypnotic beauty she has created here.
Free Music Review: Your CD collection should make room for "Room with a View" Hit: 4 Stars
As of late, country music has seen an explosion of new artists, and Carolyn Dawn Johnson is a great addition to those the new artists. You may be familiar with CDJ because of her songwriting abilities--"Single White Female" by Chely Wright and "Downtime" by Jo Dee Messina--and on CDJ's debut album, "Room with a View" she wrote or co-wrote all 11 tracks. Not only are her songwriting abilities amazing, but her voice is very melodic and easy to listen to--think folk with a little umph. She coined two songs as memorials to people in her life, "Masterpiece" and "Room with a View." Both are touching tributes, and lyrically and musically she nails both. The CD also focuses on love or searching for love, and many people will relate to the lyrics of those songs, especially "One Day Closer to You" which tells the story of not rushing into any relationship just because you are getting older. On this track, Carolyn enlists the help of guitar great Marty Stuart who Carolyn grew up listening to. "Georgia" with Martina McBride singing background vocals and "Complicated" were the first two singles off the album also complete "Room with a View" nicely. CDJ offers a new, fresh voice to country music, yet she's not a traditionalist. Nonetheless, with the trend in country music being "when in doubt, sing louder" Carolyn offers a new, peaceful approach. If you enjoy the aucostic guitar, fresh vocals and clever lyrics, "Room with a View" is a hit. Carolyn will soon be known not only for her amazing songwriting abilities, but for her strength as a vocalist and musician who can hold her own.
