Free Music Notes for GoldFree Music Review: Nice addition to the "Gold" series...with a bonus new song. Hit: 5 Stars
I've liked Universal's 2 CD "Gold" series because it's more than just another repackage of a hits package and more of an overview of album and top 40 hits.
The mid 70s "Greatest Hits" is still a favorite of mine, and a couple of the tracks on there aren't on here. There are a few of his "groovy 60s" hits left off as well, but a lot of songs that are here like "Trouble", "Sad Lisa", "Foreigner Suite", "Bitterblue", "Angelsea", and so on. I would have liked to have heard the quirky "Was Dog a Doughnut" on here and a few more early songs to have given the collection a more balanced overview, but the box set does that far better.
Biggest reason to get this is Yusef's "Indian Ocean", a song that
he has finally relented after 25 years to singing with a band again. But I had also hoped he would have put his remake of "Peace Train" that he had done a few years ago (it was with drums and backup singers that sounds great) that I like a lot.
It's unfortunate that since he converted that he became the "bad guy" in some people's eyes, long before the Dixie Chicks had radio stations steamrolling over his albums, the plane flight incident that most likely will never have him come back to the US, politics and the current state of affairs have overshadowed his music.
Free Music Review: Purrrrr Hit: 5 Stars
I think Universal are trying to squeeze every penny out of this dudes songs. (3 hits collections in the past 6 years....). But Cats songs are so moving and deep that you can hear something different every time you hear them. Glad Drywood and the Foreigner Suite are on here. It's a change from the usual. That's what makes this collection the best there is yet, varied. Paints a more complete picture of the man himself. When's the Harold & Maude Soundtrack going to come out though????
Free Music Review: YUSUF OR CAT? Either is AWESOME!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Yeah, maybe too many hits collections, but the hardcore fans will want the inclusion of the unedited INDIAN OCEAN, an epic in the caliber of the best of Cat Steven's classic work recorded last year as a fundraiser for the tsunami victims in Asia. The other tunes speak for themselves, all classic and top shelf from the premier singer-songwwriter of the seventies who grew into one of the earth's most passionate advocates for the poor and needy.
Free Music Review: Cat Stevens Gold Hit: 5 Stars
A must-have cd for all who enjoy Cat Stavens music. The collection includes not only the "hits", but some great album cuts like "Sad Lisa", "Hard headed woman" and "18th avenue". Included also, are the original songs from the movie "harold and maude".The cd opens with three of his eariest songs, and ends with a new one "Indian Summer". It's a taste of everything for Cat Stevens fans, and people who just like great music.
Free Music Review: The best of the best of's Hit: 5 Stars
After mulling through several compilations of the "Cat", this one is the most comprehensive. When you look at Greatest Hits, Best of's, Anthologies, etc, they always seem to leave out one or two songs that you're quite sure should be on there. (Conspiracy?) This one leaves out nothing vital. It was a gift for someone else, but I will wind up dubbing a copy for myself.
