Free Music Review: Still makes my head spark!

Ok, I'm an old progfan. My brother, though, he never did care very much for music, except... yes: Cat Stevens! First half of the seventies (through his friend) he just adored the man, so I kept a distance, of course... I was into Gentle Giant, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Pink Floyd, you know... (and Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Nazareth, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath...). I mean, who wants the cat Stevens? Women and little brothers do!
Then, one evening in '75, I felt my ears (and feet) react to the musick (sic) from the other room; my brothers room. What I heard was, of course, "Whistlestar", and I remember thinking something like this: 'Has he grown up, suddenly?' (I was 15, he was 14) Then "Novim's Nightmare" hit my ears, and I recognized Cat Stevens, and I thought: 'Hehehe... Here we go again.' 'Problem' was, I more or less ended up listening to the rest of it. Something about the drumming. Something about the groove. The passion. The beat. The vocals. The mood. The mystery. In short: The Music. It was fresh AND calm, in a strange way. Happy and sad. Just what I felt like in those days, I guess... Then:
When I saw the album-cover that wrapped my brother's musick, I was Really hooked (I was, after all, a progfan)! I don't remember if I bought it from my brother or bought it myself, but soon thereafter I had it. I remember that it reminded me of the fantastic album-cover of "In a Glass House" by Gentle Giant (which, by the way, is a fantastic-mega-ultra-pluss-Gem).

The legacy of singer-songwriter Cat Stevens is a distinct dichotomy: though he built his fame on a string of hit singles and bestselling albums, he seems as famous now for turning his back on that stardom for a life devoted to Islam, education, and charity. But Stevens's latter-day willingness to explore that past (finally allowing his original '70s albums to be remastered and reissued) only reinforces the old adage that hindsight is usually 20/20; some of the later collections that seemed so idiosyncratic at the time of their original releases now seem but part of the artist's larger spiritual quest. Nineteen seventy-five's Numbers is a good case in point, ostensibly a whimsical concept album (subtitled "A Pythagorean Theory Tale" and bearing a "WARNING: This album is not to be taken 2 seriously" advisory) about a distant planet whose inhabitants are charged with distributing numbers to the rest of the universe. Stevens sets up the tale in a fancifully illustrated booklet, leads off with the sprightly instrumental "Whistlestar," and then lets its characters inhabit a tellingly introspective slate of songs. Set against spare backdrops that subtly evoke everything from folk to baroque (incorporating sidemen like sax notable David Sanborn and Art Garfunkel), those protagonists mouth restless spiritual and existential concerns not unlike the singer's own. Stevens also produced this fairy tale for children of all ages, insuring Numbers a very personal space in his canon, whether he took it "2 seriously" or not. --Jerry McCulleyClassic Rock Music CDs
