Catherine Russell has the all too rare ability to cut across a variety of song styles in a single recording and make them all sound cohesive, organic, smart and full of connected feelings. This disc has echos of everything from gospel to jump to blues and back through Bob Wills for good measure, yet it all makes sense. To my ears its her Sam cooke allusions that work most transcendently: "Put Me Down Easy" is pure pleasure and simple moving artistry. A great talent finally stepping out front.

In a field where any vocalist who attempts the classic canon is granted that sobriquet as a matter of course, she stands out like a diamond among rhinestones.
