Free Music Review: Criminally overlooked treasure of a classic!
Hit: 5 Stars

I just cannot understand how a record like this that spawned four smash hits on the radio back in 1990 and 1991 could go virtually unnoticed and ultimately just be in the category of cult hits. When four singles lifted from it in fact make it into the top ten and are still very popular to this day, yet the parent album is almost forgotten completely baffles me to this day. With four top ten hits, one would assume that this album would at least go platinum but it barely dented the charts despite the runaway popularity of the songs that were released as singles. I bought a copy of this album in the summer of 1999 and a whole bunch of memories came flooding back to me with songs like 1989's "Come on And Get My Love", "Just Another Dream" and "Everybody Move", and without a doubt the timeless classic "Touch Me All Night Long". "Move To This" remains a staple album of early 1990s Eurodance pop and remains one of the albums that while mostly centering the dance pop styles of that era has aged unbelievably gracefully and surprisingly doesn't sound dated at all even when placed against some newer music.

The cheese factor is evident in many areas of this album but the cheese factor instead just makes this album all the more fun to listen to and to escape from the negativity of today's world. The most blatant cheese factor is mostly centered on the suprisngly bland album cover with it's rather odd color scheme and the sometimes laughable Louise Brooks hairdo. The rather unappealing color scheme used on the album cover on both the front and back with it's texture, is virtually opposite to the immensely edgy and rich style that permeate the albums music altogether. It's definitely not the worst album cover even by a long shot but the sometimes plain look is deceiving because the music is far from plain.

While "Touch Me All Night Long" is remembered with it's electrifying techno beat and Dennis' excellent vocals, the version on this parent album is VERY different from the remix that most dance fans are familiar with and is one of the great suprises that this album offers. The version that most people are familiar with has that unforgettable Europop techno beat and strong basslines along with those tinkling low-pitched keyboard effects but the version on here is very different but every bit as good albeit in a very different light. The version on the parent album is less techno-oriented, funkier and more jolly in sound and is slightly jazzier in sound as well. The techno version is the more popular version but the album version is a must-hear just to hear this classic in a totally different light.

Some of the other tracks besides "Come On and Get Your Love" and "All Night Long" however warrant a great deal of attention. "Too Many Walls" is perhaps the most unique track on this album and was a well-deserved top ten hit in the fall of 1990. The song melody wise has the undertones that would make it a moody ballad but at the same time, the track has a danceable metallic beat that would make it a wonderful semi-ballad/semi-dance track. The song combines the elements of a ballad and the elements of a dance track. Quite something to hear. The moody melody of the track and the unique chord changes that permeate the track are just a delight to my ears and remains one of the highlight tracks. While it may have been out for many years, "Too Many Walls" doesn't sound dated at all and in fact defies a lot of late 1980s/early 1990s trends as well and that's quite an achievement. The saxophones and Flugel horns during the middle of the track from 2:56 until the track rises a whole step in melody is absolutely incredible and that along makes this track a timeless classic in my book.

The orchestral ending of "Too Many Walls" perfectly blends into the moodiest and most emotional song on this album "Tell Me". Blending Europop balladry and moody Quiet Storm atmosphere "Tell Me" is another highlight on this album. Cathy Dennis's vocals are absolutely incredible and are among the best singing she's ever done and is ironically hardly cheesy at all. The lyrics are very good as well and are in fact quite impressive even by dance-artists' standards. The beauty of the ambient keyboards and soft vocals are really amazing and "Tell Me" is another one of the best tracks on this album.

The only occasional drawback is that most of the dance tracks do sometimes suffer from sounding very similar to each other at times but that is offset by the different styles that are unique to them. "Everybody Move", the longest track on this short album (5:15) is a very Prince-influenced track with a mix of late 1980s Europop keyboard effects and rock drum beats to create a really unique and colorful track. I would even go far enough to say that it would almost perfectly fit on Prince's "Grafitti Bridge" soundtrack against "Round and Round", another wonderful classic but that's up for another review on the future. The title track is another excellent dance track with a really good rhythm and keyboard styles.

"My Beating Heart" is the cheesiest song on this album and sounds the most dated of the tracks on this album. While it is certainly my least favorite track on this album, the cheese factor present is offset by the horn instruments and the moodiness of the melody. The beat though is really cool and while this was the track that took the longest to get into mainly because of the cheese factor, it is yet another great track even if I give it let's say a 4.7 versus a perfect 5 or more for every other track on this album.

The remaining two tracks "Got to Get Your Love" and "Taste My Love" close this album on a glorious note. "Got To Get Your Love" is a high-energy dance pop track with pulsating beats, unique keyboards effects, and a fun big city party vibe to it. The tambourine effects towards the last minute of the track are really fun to listen to. The final track "Taste My Love" is on the border of being pure cheesy with it's outright cheesy lyrics but the song overall is a great dance track. The song ends this wonderful trip on a highly confident note.

"Move To This" is without a doubt a staple in the history of dance pop music of the early 1990s and is one of the greatest albums of that era. While mostly centering on the styles of the era, the album has aged incredibly well and avoids ending up in the era of dated pop fluff. This is highly recommended
