Free Music Notes for Live in Europe

Free Music Review: Not their best
Hit: 4 Stars

If you are new to CCR, this CD is really not for you. You should look for Chronicles 1 and 2, and then for the regular albums. But, if you are a CCR fan, this CD is a good place to see how important Tom Fogerty was for CCR. In some trakcs (specially "Up Around the Bend") you'll probabilly miss Tom's guitar. Anyway, it is a good album, with great songs (most of my favs are here). The sound quality could be better (vocals are just too high and bass is really low). If you want to buy a live CCR album, look for The Concert. It is not an excellent album too, but it is better.

Free Music Review: Troupers, They - And Hurt Only By Muddy Recording
Hit: 3 Stars

It isn't easy to lose your rhythm guitarist when you've still got a touring commitment to make, but don't say Creedence Clearwater Revival weren't troupers to the end. And they make a game stab at rocking around the clock as a trio, bringing off some bristling hits on some of their signature material. The muddy recording is worth a two-star docking, but there's no questioning the energetic performance; no questioning the band's determination to rock. (Forget the muddy recording and just feel it when they yank a nice long ride out of "Keep On Chooglin'," their usual live raveup number - bassist Stu Cook practically serves as a butt-kicker to John Fogerty's guitar and harmonica wrangling.) Even as they approached a very bitter end, Creedence Clearwater Revival was still capable of making gripping rock and roll; even if they missed a hole to fill here and there without Tom Fogerty, the spirit kept the music from sprawling too far. Don't be afraid of this one.

Free Music Review: The spirit was willing
Hit: 3 Stars

CCR as a trio had a spare sound that did breathe new life into some of their classic songs. While Tom Fogerty was greatly missed, John Fogerty does an admirable job on guitar holding the CCR sound together. I'd actually give this CD two stars for the sound quality. It's muddy, hissy and sounds like it was mastered from a 2nd or 3rd generation copy.

If you're a hardcore CCR fan, the boxed set has this CD remastered and with superior sound. Additionally, the CD features two tracks not on this CD. Live in Europe proves that they were professionals to the end but The Concert (recorded for at an Oakland, California show for a television special)is far superior (The Concert also benefits from the remastering as part of the boxed set).

Skip this one and go for one of their classic albums.

Free Music Review: Average at Best
Hit: 3 Stars

This was the first of a couple of live releases for CCR and it was an unfortunate release. Recorded after back up guitarist Tom Fogarty left the band we're treated to just a quick run-down of hits. With the exception of the final number "Keep on Chooglin'" these songs say nothing new. If I remeber right no song broke 4 minutes except "Chooglin'", which ran about 14 minutes. However, it was a dumb song to begin with so isn't worth the time to listen.

I would suggest you pass on this unless you're looking to round out your collection. Instead, just buy one of the many greatest hits collections out there. The sound will be of better quality and the music will be the same anyway.

Free Music Review: We miss Tom!
Hit: 3 Stars

This is an interesting album in that it showcases how important Tom Fogerty was to the CCR sound. John does an admirable job of trying to hold down the guitar parts single-handedly on this recording, but the real feel isn't there. An interesting item for serious Creedence fans (I've got one), but not the best representation of the band.
