Sometimes, as a reviewer, even when you like the obscure, even the bizarre, you like to go straight down the middle and write about an album that is an obvious choice. For my full endorsement, there is no better pick than From Rags To Rufus.
The big change in soul and funk from the 1960s to the 1970s was that the funky and the melodic, it was found, could be welded together. There no longer was a divide between a James Brown hook and a Temptations sing along swoop. Geniuses like Labelle and Stevie Wonder figured out how to make surefire AM singles that worked as hard funk, and could even make it on progressive FM radio, which soul was glaringly absent from in the 1960s
Rags to Rufus was in fact produced by Wonder, which should be no surprise. The fat, hooky bass and melodic chord progressions put this amazing, fresh funk on a melodic level that competes with the best pop.
Listen just for starters to the beefy wha wha hook of "Tell Me Something Good," the big single off Rags. Chaka Kahn's soaring front line rises over the melodic chord changes, while the background packs enough harmony and layers of sound to make this the best AM radio had to offer in the early 1970s.
Yet, the thorny breaks on "Tell Me Something Good" --that twisted bluesy bait that lures you and then won't let go--is as tough as James Brown or Stax's 1960s funky nails, and would not have sounded out of place coming off an FM Chambers Brothers or Hendrix set. Play it next to some Led Zeppelin or even the most out of out Coltrane, and yep, the bell still rings perfectly
This was a new type of music--that perfect blend of style and substance that many R&B musicians tried in the 1970s but few truly mastered.
Rufus is one of those few, and it is no amazement that these guys went from Rags To Rufus.
