Free Music Review: Welcome home, Miss Chaka!

"Funk This" is like listening to a Chaka album from the 80s, which I mean as a compliment. Frankly, I wasn't wild about "Classic Khan" -- I love Chaka, I love standards; but by and large, it just didn't work for me. "Funk This" is my idea of classic Khan: solid funk beats and that amazing vocal instrument of hers, shouting, wailing, overdubbed into heavenly soul choirs. The originals are good (though none of them truly changed my life), but the covers are what really rocked me. In a year somewhat overfull of Joni Mitchell covers, Chaka's slowed-down bump-and-grind on Joni's "Ladies' Man" may be the hottest Joni cover to emerge this year. She even manages "You Belong to Me", with Michael McDonald yet, without so much as a hint of Vegas lounge. And I defy anyone over the age of 40 to sit still when Chaka launches into a re-worked "You Got the Love", featuring ex-Rufus bandmate Tony Maiden. It's been a good year for rock divas of a certain age, with fine new albums from Joni, Ann Wilson, and Joan Armatrading, among others. "Funk This" stands alongside those works and holds its own. If you're an old-school Chaka fan, I promise you won't be disappointed.
