This collection of old-timey songs rises to must play status on the strength of the songs themselves, the musicianship, and its vocals. Every track has something to offer. While southern drawls might be mostly missing southern sensibilities are not.
From the impeccably played stand up base to the fiddles, banjos, and guitars every track offers a trip into the history and future of American music. With the help of the likes of Ricky Skaggs and Pat Metheny it is a trip well worth taking.
And,yes, Haden stays true to his jazz heritage. And no, with just a few exceptions, Rambling Boy does not sound at all like a jazz album. It may be that this CD sells to many who have never before listened to Haden. It may also be that some fans of Haden's jazz may be left wanting something else. One things that is certain, though, is Rambling Boy's status as an updated classic American music album.

'Rambling Boy' is a marvelous compilation of authentic, front-porch Americana. I love country and hear my share of Bluegrass. If you're a fan of groups such as Charlie Haden, as I am, this will show you what their predecessors sounded like. True roots music. The recording is great, as well. Nary a hiss or pop, which is quite remarkable for recordings of this era. The engineers obviously embarked on a labor of love. The songs and the singers are first rate- this is a sing along CD- grab it and bring it with you- warning: it may cause foot tapping and hand clapping.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 11-16-08

Free Music Review: Off-Beat Disc of Roots Music, by a famous Jazz Pro Hit: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Here famed jazz bassist Haden offers up some blue-grass tinged roots music from his family/childhood musical past. He does a fine job of it so far as I can tell, happily inviting in several guest artists who make their own distinctive contributions witout upsetting the overall album apple carts. The technical expertise is laid back, yet stunning in retrospect. Blue grass sounds all folksy and easy, but putting the ensemble together without making it all come off stiff and brittle is not nearly as easy as a casual listener might think. Is this the blue grass to end all blue grass outings? Probably not, but rather a mellow and entertaining look back at Haden's musical history, an act of musical blue grass celebration, a house party with surprise guests if you will. Recommended.

Since everyone likes to classify music, first let's say what this is not. This is not a collection of "Country" music nor is it "Bluegrass" music. This is an example of American Roots music at its best that one would find in Smoky Mtn area especially of Ole Virginia. A lot of very excellent songs in this cd. The golden nugget is Roseanne Cash's version of "The Wildwood Flower". Even though she is not blood to the Carter Family she is as close as anyone could get. I don't understand the inclusion of Elvis Costello and Pat Metheny. The Haden ladies songs are just wonderful. This CD is recommended if you want to go back and hear some good quality American Roots music. Too bad Doc Watson wasn't included! Charlie Haden has a great CD here. Maybe a Grammy consideration.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Rambling Boy by Charlie Haden and Friends was a mind-blowing experience for this jazz and bluegrass fan. Haden and Friends take a straight forward, favorite like Wildwood Flower sung by Rosanne Cash and perk it up with wonderful bass lines from the jazz genre. My favorite cut is the soulful plea sung by Josh Haden in "Spiritual". This alone is worth the price of the CD.
Not only is the material and treatment excellent, the technical recording is top notch. Each instrumental voice is clear and distinct, a tribute to the engineering.
I'd not heard of Charlie Haden until I first heard this CD. I will surely explore some more. Rambling Boy gets a very rare five star rating from this tight-fisted reviewer!
