Free Music Notes for Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945

Free Music Review: Outstanding
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD provides both great music and a look into bebop as it was beginning to make its mark on the American musical scene. In addition to Dizzy and Bird, the musicians include Al Haig, Curly Russell, Max Roach, Big Sid Catlett (on two tracks), and Don Byas (on one track). The sound has been very nicely cleaned up with digital technology, the tunes (four written or co-written by Dizzy) are excellent, and the playing is superb. The photographs, most taken very close in time to the performance, are a nice bonus.

Highly recommended for both its historical importance and the quality of the music.

Free Music Review: You'll like it trust me.
Hit: 5 Stars

As a collector I feel lucky and grateful that these recordings are being made available. It could've been another 25 to 50 years or more before this was found but now it's right here in my hands! I just want to listen to these Town Hall recordings over and over! I hear something different every time. The sound quality is better than a lot of the the recordings that Bird and Dizzy did in the studio. It's amazing to hear these
compositions being played live during the time that the music was still new.
I'm sure a lot of Japanese jazz fans were happy!(I'm one of them!)

Free Music Review: Bird Lives
Hit: 5 Stars

Any new and unheard Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie is a major find and when that music is in such terrific sound an incredible discovery. This recording is a must for all lovers of these two jazz giants and is a joy to hear. The only unfortunate aspect of this recording is that the Erroll Garner estate did not allow his portion of the concert to be released as it would have also been a great discovery for his fans as well. Anyway, that said, don't wait any longer to pick up this amazing recording....Dean Pratt

Free Music Review: Amazing, raw recording
Hit: 5 Stars

The unevenness of the recording attests to the authenticity of the live concert that captures these two jazz giants early in their careers. Their playing shines through the fog that obscures the clarity in the opening strains of the concert, but the patient listener will be rewarded, as the engineer adjusts the recording levels and mikes, with an exciting live performance by the young Parker and Gillespie. Especially scintillating are the solo breaks: a capella runs, leaps and flourishes that never falter.

Free Music Review: Talk About a Hidden Treasure
Hit: 5 Stars

This concert has never been released previously. Not even on vinyl, which makes it even more mind-boggling that this great concert has been able to escape release for so long. This is Bird and Diz at the top of their game, just when bebop was starting to get big. It's funny how Bird was late showing up for this gig and in the middle of the first song you can hear the crowd cheer as he walks on stage. This album leaves me some hope that there's some more great Bird out there still to be discovered.
