Free Music Review: worthy of serious consideratiion Hit: 4 Stars
It has become fashionable of late to pick on Charlotte Church. Her lifestyle, her "bad-boy" boyfriend, her apparently getting away from the music with which she made her repuation. One fact remains...Charlotte Church has a tremendous talent. I've read a lot of nonsense about her losing her voice with this CD being used as proof. Well it is proof, but proof that nothing has changed, except perhaps that Charlotte's voice has matured. She has lost a note or two on the higher end of her soprano range, (it sounds like that to me, at least) but she has gained in tone, her ability to "deliver" a song. Most of these tracks are not re-recorded but simply transferred over from her earlier releases, so the early songs are the same 12 year old that everyone marveled over 5 years ago, the later ones from the maturing 17 year old young woman of today. I have to confess I did not care overly much for the "early" Charlotte Church. Great voice yes, but it didn't "speak" to me. She won me over with "Enchantment" the recording that I think is her finest work to date...(a minority opinion I admit.)If for no other reason, this CD deserves a honorable place for "All Love Can Be" from the movie "A Beautiful Mind;" a beautiful evocative song, that should be required listening for new parents...It's easy to imagine a young mother singing this to her newborn baby. My opinion: the best song on the CD. "Habanera" from "Enchanment" is a song that is going to cause me to eat some crow here...In my review of "Enchantment" I said I couldn't stand it, but it gets better with each listening. Something about her delivery gets the song across with an amazing sensuality that grows the more you listen to it. It defintely grows on you. Other highlights are the wonderful duet with Josh Groban, "The Prayer"...Yes his voice overpowers hers, but how is that a reflection on her talent? Also don't miss "It's The Heart That Matters Most" an almost but not quite pop sounding tune. Plus you have Charlotte's amazing renditions of "Amazing Grace," "My Langan Love", and "She Moved Through The Fair." I would have liked to seen more of the traditonal Celtic songs here, such as "Danny Boy," "Carrickfergus," and "The Water Is Wide" or the showtunes such as (especially) "Somewhere." It is in these fields where Charlotte's talent shines brightest. I think most of the crictism of this recording has been due to its title, but I think those folks are missing an inside joke...The title should be read as "Prelude, the best of Charlotte Church" with an implied "So far" at the end..this is the begining of her career...the "Prelude"..get it? One other thing she has done wrong is something she couldn't help. She grew up. Child performers always has to face this, and guess what folks? Remember that 12 year old with the bangs that stood in front of microphones looking a bit shy and nervous? Well all you can do is remember her, because she is gone. Take a look at the back cover of "Prelude." What you see is a young woman in a beaded gown, with curves enough to catch any man's eye. The 12 year old is gone for good now, "Our Charlotte" (as the papers in her native Wales used to call her) is growing up. Her talent is growing up too..it is just changing not diminishing. Five stars for her voice but I took one away for what I consider poor song selection for an overall grade of 4
