Free Music Notes for Voice of an AngelFree Music Review: Beautiful voice Hit: 5 Stars
I love the story of Charlotte Church - she was discovered by her response to a telephone-in contest from the 'Richard and Judy' show. Charlotte recounts that she was told by the producers to sing down the phone, which she did, and was invited to appear on the programme right away. The rest, as they say, is history. This CD is the first of her productions - one must give her credit for initially resisting the urge to become another Britney Spears or similar type, staying with traditional, classical, and religious music that serves to highlight her vocal talents well. While there are times she is a bit more ambitious than her voice will permit at the moment (some pieces of music are specifically intended for a more mature voice, so give Ms. Church time!), she has a good range, a great tone, and a wonderful sense of music as she sings.
This particular CD is one of several standards. From the religious side, she has such classics as Mawby's setting for Psalm 23, Andrew Lloyd Webber's setting for 'Pie Jesu', Franck's 'Panis Angelicus', and Parry's 'Jerusalem'. On the more classical/traditional side, she has versions of 'Danny Boy', several Celtic/Welsh tunes ('My Lagan Love', 'Suo-Gan', 'Y Gylfinir'), and even a piece from Humperdinck's 'Hansel and Gretel'.
Charlotte Church was just 13 years old when this CD was released; she has since gone from strength to strength with later releases. Her popularity has helped to revive an interest among younger listeners for music that they might otherwise overlook - that is one of the very great benefits of a career such as hers. Identified as a classical artist, yet being media savvy toward other people her own age, she embarked upon a still-growing career with this album that promises greatness.
This greatness can already be heard in its beginning stages on this recording.
Free Music Review: A star is born -- with a long glorious career ahead Hit: 5 Stars
Yes, Charlotte is the most adorable, polite, and incredibly poised young lady that I believe I have ever heard interviewed, where she appeared on the local Adult Contemporary station in the Washington DC area (107.3). I, too, thought that this might be a case of too much too soon, until I heard her sing live on the air, something she doesn't do all that often. She sang Pie Jesu, her signature song.In the midst of a morning drive time, 3 hardened wisecracking morning disc jockeys were stunned into silence and moved to tears, such was the power of this little girl's voice. As listeners called in, the feeling was unanimous -- this truly is the "voice of an angel" Is she technically perfect? No. But my God, in 10 years at a still young 22 she will have audiences utterly entranced. But having already played for the Pope (twice) and for the Prince of Wales, and the Queen, and a PBS special under her belt at the ripe old age of 13, this is FAR from a novelty act or a flash in the pan. Amazon's reviewer totally missed the boat on that score. God has graced this child with something incredible. As music lovers, we will be the beneficiaries of watching her mature and fine tune this incredible instrument, her voice. Those opera afficianados who technically nit-pick Charlotte's young voice have missed the whole point. It is their loss, and a pity that they no longer appreciate the music for what it is. In Charlotte's case, the music is part of a journey all of us will take as she grows to perfection. The music, the song...the voice. What an incredible trip it will be. I wish her nothing but the best, and all success and God's grace as she embarks on what will be a glorious career.
Free Music Review: Charlotte Church: Voice of an Angel Hit: 5 Stars
Having enormously enjoyed Ms Church's first CD, and not having bought the second one yet, I read all the consumer reviews presented here, back through October. I'm glad I did.On first playing Church's CD numerous times (and trying to sing along, as a 50+ year old whose hey-days were in the Oberlin College Choir..and not since) I was mesmerized by her sweet voice and most of her songs. I do still love her CD and I will buy the next one (and I don't feel like I am participating in the ruination of her voice by buying her second CD.) But I was very glad to read some of the kinder, more constructive critical reviews here which reminded me that in all the enthusiasm for Charlotte Church's performance, we really are talking about a young voice which, with its very possible great potential, one hopes will not be abused and overused in its youthful stages, but given thoughtful training, mindful of the need for rest, so that this lovely resource will not be strained and spoiled. It was interesting to read the reviews of the young (teenaged) singers who submitted reviews; some of them expressed their concern for the future of Ms. Church's voice. Others (and other reviewers) seemed simply disgruntled, jealous or spiteful. This young lady deserves a a great deal of respect for her accomplishments so far, and I join those who urge her and her trainers to take care of her vocal resources, letting her voice mature naturally. Charlotte Church is guileless, charming, lovely to listen to, and hopefully will continue to be so for many years to come.
Free Music Review: Charlotte does have the voice of an Angel ! Hit: 5 Stars
Now I'm just an old Harley Davidson rider who enjoys classical music... and I do not have the training of some of the "music critics" that rated this CD low in their review... but this young lady does sing like an angel. She may not be ready for formal opera at this point, and as the "music critics" point out in their reviews you will read here... she may even need a bit more training. But my savage soul was calmed by this Angels voice. She has a beautiful voice, she puts her heart into this music, and her singing mesmerized me. Everyone cannot be a "perfect", in fact I do not want everyone to be perfect... and I do not want everyone to be the same. My favorite opera singers are Luciano Pavarotti and Beverly Sills. Not to bad for a Harley guy. Charlotte does not show their qualities yet... but she is 14 years old, and again... I say, sings like Angel. It takes all kinds folks... I like Chateau Rothchild... and I like a cold beer, you have your big bad Harley guys with tattoos, classical voices like Luciano... and beautiful Angels like Charlotte Church. If you buy this album, you will not be disappointed... unless you have become a music snob. The people that make me wonder the most are those that critic this young lady saying "I am in classical music training, and she is this or that". Folks... unless I missed the bus, I don't see your name on the top ten list, lighten up. Enjoy her beautiful voice for what it is... the voice of a little angel.
Free Music Review: less energy, but very beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
In the end, I decided to give this CD 5 stars for several reasons. 1) Charlotte has a pure voice of much beauty and strength 2) the music is very beautiful as well 3)there are a lot of really great tracks on this album. I especially really loved "Amazing Grace", because to my surprise it was sung a capella, using voices to make music instead of instruments. I also really liked the spirituality of the music, since tracks 1,2,4,5,6,7,13, and 17 were religious related. Even a non-religious person can enjoy the music (Amazing Grace is one good example). I also loved the lovely traditional and folk music.Still, I liked her second album better because it had more energy and the music paced a little quicker. Her second album also had better orchestration arrangements that made a broader and more clear sound. For example, "Lagan Love" and the Three Welsh Bird Songs didn't have orchestrations, but simply had a harp playing music. This makes a lovely sound, but doesn't fill it's easily dominated by Charlotte's voice. This album has various types of songs, ranging from classical to traditional to modern musicals. Her second album was more classical. Well, even though this album lacked some energy, I still highly recommend it. Charlotte has pure talent, better than most teenage singers today and the beauty of her voice in this album shows that!
