Free Music Review: STILL THE BEST OF HER ALBUMS

This is the first of Charlotte Church's recordings, recorded back when she was still a normal, unspoiled 12-year-old Welsh girl. I first fell in love with her voice when I heard her singing "I Vow Thee My Country" on the radio about 8 years ago, and was blown away to find out that she was only 12 years of age!
I bought the CD shortly after that and have listened to it a bazillion times. Just recently, I decided to pull it out again and found myself enjoying it just as much now as I did then. She was probably in her best vocal form in this CD, before her voice became "overtrained," and eventually, ruined by her "Crazy Chick" habits.
Among the standouts -- besides "I Vow Thee My Country" -- are "Amazing Grace," "Ave Maria," "3 Welsh Bird Songs," "My Lagan Love," "Suo-Gan," "A Lullaby" and, of course, her signature song, "Pie Jesu." At the time, I thought she had the potential of becoming one of the greatest sopranos of all time once she reached adulthood. Sadly, this has not been the case, and her latest album, "Tissues and Issues," is a reflection of how far she has fallen both vocally and in her personal life.
If you buy only one Charlotte Church album, this would definitely be it.

Endorsement:What a tremendous voice! Even if you have no interest in opera and opera-like styles, you have to hear Charlotte sing just to witness her burgeoning talent! Her sparkling and playful personality comes across as she sings her way into your heart!
Even more incredibly, she was only 12 when she made this CD!
While her voice talents have matured over the past couple of years, it does not take away from her "young" skills demonstrated on this CD.

Notes to Critics:
Some critics get a little rough on their reviews on her, they really should remember that Charlotte was only 12 years old when this CD was cut! The varied comments regarding the CD"s title, "Voice of an Angel" are a bit cheap. Alternative proposals for "Voices of Angels" have been singers who are more extensively trained, much older, and often publically something less than "angelic".
Everyone should have their own "favorite" singer / voice, but, there is no need to beat up an incredibly talented and very innocent 12 year old!
Come on! Get a perspective on life!

I don't think I've ever seen such a split in opinion. Almost every review is either 5 stars or 1. Why ? Here's my 2 cents.
Music, vocal or instrumental, is an activity that requires at a minimum 2 participants - a singer or player and a hearer.
1. The misician or singer must certainly have technical proficiency, but technique alone will only produce mediocre music. What makes a musician or singer outstanding is the ability to express emotion and to put their soul into the music.
But the musician is only one half of the equation !
2. The hearer must also bring something to the performance. The ability to discern technical accomplishment is important and can certainly enhance the experience of a performance. But what is absolutely critical is that the listener be willing and able to open her heart and soul and allow the music to enter.
Some folks have left Charlotte knocking at their door. Perhaps they can't hear her over all the noise that their technical expertise is making.
I would suggest that the negative reviewers would benefit from giving their ears and brains a rest, and instead listen with their heart and soul.

To those that don`t appreciateher music, I would only like to remind you that Sony recently signed her to a six figure contract to produce five albums. When they brought her in to sign the contract Sony executives had her picture placed on the wall between Celine Dion and Bruce Springsteen. I am reminded of when Oxana Baiul won the gold medal in figure skating over Nancy Kerrigan. She won not because of her technical scores, but because of artistry. I can tell you from sixty years of experience thatCharlotte Curch has sold over a million CD`s not because of a voice like Maria Callas, but because she has a voice that appeals to a great many people, and she appears to sing from her heart and soul.Iwould also like to add that if you are of Celtic heritage you can`t help but love her selection of music on Voice Of An Angel. We are all different though, so I fully understand that what sounds wonderful to me can sound lousy to others. After all, Ihave never liked Streisand! Ido know this though, Ms Church has already sold more CD`s at thirteen than most performers will sell in eternity.Free Music Review: A startlingly pure voice of wonderful talent!

I had CNN on the TV in the background about a month ago and suddenly a crystal clear voice drew me to the story about a 12-year-old Welsh girl who had a #1 chart topper in the UK. I spent the next 2 weeks desperately trying to find out how to get a copy of her CD, VOICE OF AN ANGEL, and I finally secured a copy on the first day of US release from Amazon. This kid is absolutely phenomenal! the selection on the CD leans towards the spiritual, and it will be interesting to see how she fares with other genres of music, however, her first foray is clearly a mark of her brilliant future. The only negative thing I can say about it is that the orchestra backup tends to be overdone. Sometimes her voice is overshadowed by the instruments. It's almost as if they were trying to be the net under the highwire just in case Ms. Church faltered at some point. They needn't have worried... and I hope her next CD features more HER than the background. The only two singers that compare for absolute singing purity in my mind are Judy Collins and Joan Baez. A must have for almost anyone!
