Free Music Review: The first studio album of their movie era

Let's Make A New Dope Deal was the first regular studio album Cheech & Chong made after their break into the movies. (The Up In Smoke soundtrack that preceded it was just that, a soundtrack). This was material written for an album rather than a movie. There were some funny tracks on this recording but as a whole I didn't feel it was up to the standards of their early to mid 70's output. The cuts on side one each flowed into the next with various characters and situations while the cuts on side two were more individually staged scenarios. Clearly they were pulling inspiration from the events of the day which were far removed from the more hippie orientations of their older recordings. My favorite was the very last track "17th American Tour" in which a couple of apparently British rock stars were fighting over whose turn it was to throw the television out the hotel window, (most likely a parody of the real life antics of Led Zeppelin). Let's Make A New Dope Deal is not really essential Cheech & Chong for the casual collector but to their more avid fans it's still a fun album to listen to.

Let's Make A New Dope Deal, Cheech & Chong's sixth and final album (not including Greatest Hit), was originally released in 1980. It contains the legendary bits Queer Wars, Bloat On, Let's Make A New Dope Deal and more. Warner Records made the album out-of-print in the early 80's. In November 2005, Cheech and Chong Dot Com (now Cheech and Chong Fans Dot Com) signed an agreement with Warner Records to re-release Sleeping Beauty and Let's Make A New Dope Deal on CD. Let's Make A New Dope Deal hasn't been on CD until now. Each CD has been digitally re-mastered and the artwork from the original vinyl release has been digitally enhanced.Miscellaneous Music CDs
