Free Music Notes for Chicago

Free Music Review: It's all I care about...
Hit: 5 Stars

Chicago is one of the best films I've ever seen and the soundtrack is the perfect companion to the film. I gave it 5 stars even though the last two tracks I always skip as they aren't featured in the movie and are probably there to appeal to young audiences, but they're unnecessary and not my sort of thing. But those songs couldn't dampen my appreciation for this music for one second. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere along with the ensemble cast including Queen Latifah and John C. Reily have made this production of the soundtrack an awe-inspiring experience. Here's my opinion on each of the songs featured:

1. OVERTURE/AND ALL THAT JAZZ (5/5) One of the standout songs and probably the most well-loved and well-known of all Chicago songs it was important it set the mood for the movie and for Velma to really belt it out. Catherine Zeta-Jones shows off her great musical beginnings in all her numbers, particularly this one, where she makes Velma her own. One of the best produced songs on the soundtrack.

2. FUNNY HONEY (4/5) First song by Renee Zellweger (Roxie) doesn't disappoint, with the sultry desire of Roxie handled just right by Zellweger. It only got 4 stars because it's a slower song, and one that's got to "grow" on the listener. But Renee handles it with class.

3. WHEN YOU'RE GOOD TO MAMA (4/5) Who knew Queen Latifah could belt one out?? Not me until I saw Chicago. But yet this is a standout song, and Latifah handles it well, showing off her brazen voice.

4. CELL BLOCK TANGO (5/5) Most people seem to adore this song and I can see why. It has the catchy hook, the clever lyrics and the thumping bass. Watch out for Mya as a murderess in this. A definite highlight.

5. ALL I CARE ABOUT (4.5/5) Richard Gere: another surprise in the singing stakes. He sounds good, cept here he isn't given much room to show off his voice like in other songs. But he does this song justice, "and then some"!

6. WE BOTH REACHED FOR THE GUN (5/5) Whoever's idea it was to set the scene as Billy Flynn puppeteering Roxie's every move should be rewarded. It works so well that I can't think of the scene being played out any other way now. Billy Flynn has fun on this track that it clever, cunning and everything you believe that Billy Flynn is.

7. ROXIE (4.5/5) After this song, the name on your lips will be "Roxie". Renee's second song is better than the first and you can tell she's fully involved in making Roxie a part of her. A definitive song from the musical.

8. I CAN'T DO IT ALONE (4/5) This song is sort of a little bit strange, because in the movie Catherine is dancing where there's no singing, but of course on a CD you don't have visual so all you hear is "I'd go...", "We'd go..." and the like. Still a fun track if you can remember the scene in the movie and put together the missing pieces.

9. MISTER CELLOPHANE (4.5/5) John C. Reily shines in this heartwrenching song of how no one, least of all his wife Roxie, notices him. John C. Reily portrayes Amos with the "less is more" approach, and it works. He really is the heart of the show.

10. RAZZLE DAZZLE (5/5) My personal favourite, this lets Richard Gere take centre stage of a three-ring circus, showcasing his talents to Roxie and to the listener. A catchy melody with a fitting message, it's a definite standout and like I mentioned, my favourite song from the musical.

11. CLASS (4/5) This was taken out of the director's cut of the movie but luckily appears on the soundtrack. It's a worthwhile song and Catherine and Latifah's vocals gel beautifully here. Not a standout though.

12. NOWADAYS (ROXIE) (4.5/5) Renee belts out the feelings of Roxie Hart in this, her last solo. You can really feel what she's singing about, which is true testament to the talents of Zellweger. The interchange to the theatre is a little odd on CD however.

13. NOWADAYS/HOT HONEY RAG (4.5/5) The final encore where Velma and Roxie realise the evil of their ways and laugh in its face. Halfway through it becomes an instrumental and again it lacks something as we cannot see the brilliant choreography during this part, but the music is just a delight.

14. I MOVE ON (4/5) Played during the credits, it's an original song that fits together the pieces of the show and brings it to a fitting end.

Chicago Poster

The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making, but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actually started her career on the British boards (she was in The Pajama Game and 42nd Street), so her turn as slinky Velma Kelly isn't that surprising; Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart is more of a leftfield choice, but she shows she can handle the singing demands with pizzazz. The real revelation may well be rapper Queen Latifah, who belts out "When You're Good to Mama" with a marvelous affinity for the material. OK, so the R&B reprise of "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" by Queen Latifah, Macy Gray, and Lil' Kim fails to convince, while Anastacia's "Love Is a Crime" is just blah (rest easy, purists, it's over the end credits). On the other hand, the CD provides two bonuses: "Class," which was cut from the movie, and "I Move On," a great duet written by Kander and Ebb for the final cut. It's really easy to mess up film adaptations of Broadway shows. Happily, Chicago proves it can be done right. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
