I adored the movie, and I love the soundtrack just as much. It really gives you a feel for the 1920s, especially on standout songs such as "All That Jazz," "Roxie," and "Razzle Dazzle." I was humming several of these songs, like "Razzle Dazzle" and "Mister Cellophane," as I left the theater, and now I have several of the other tunes in my head most of the time. I cannot say enough about the song "Class," which was probably cut out of the film because of its bad language. At least that's the only reason that could be even the slightest bit logical. I just adore the song---everything about it is great, from the superb phrasing to the lyrics and harmonies. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah are such great singers! I am a big fan of Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, and "Class" put me in mind of them (though the period's not quite right). Buy this film and soundtrack!
Free Music Review: Dazzling! Hit: 5 Stars
An incredible soundtrack to an incredible movie. Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Richard Gere give pitch perfect performances, and who would have thought. Catherine shines on the opening All That Jazz, its sexy and exciting. Renee Zellwegger impresses on the sultry Funny Honey, with her soft, angelic voice. Richard Gere is suave and cool on Razzle Dazzle. There are so many other highlights. Queen Latifah knocks em dead on the brassy When You're Good to Mama, proving that some Rappers can sing as well, and the Cell Block Tangois fun and hilarious. The new songs added to the soundtrack don't really fit in with the entire soundtrack, but Anastacias powerful, sultry pipes on Love is A Crime is alot of fun. The rap version of the Cell Block Tango by Queen Latifah, Lil Kim, and Macy Gray is a bad attempt at trying to create another Lady Marmalade, however, its a small problem in a otherwise perfect album. The must have soundtrack of the year!
Free Music Review: Who knew they could sing? Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, in all honesty who knew that these actors could sing so well? They took my breath away espesially Catherine Zeta-Jones and her version of Velma Kelly. I'm going to take this opportunity and diss Parade magazine by saying that Zeta-Jones did gave a grand performance her voice is so amazing and her dancing is just perfect. I think she did just as good if not better than Bebe Newerth. As far as the rest of the cast, I was impressed with Richard Gere and his portrayal of Billy Flynn and Queen Latifah did an outstanding job and the prison matron. Renee Zellweger her performance was good and her dancing was decent but her voice dosn't appeal to me but hey not everyone is a good singer, evidentally she didn't think she was that good of a vocalist either concidering that she prefered not perform at the Acamdemy Awards. All around I was impressed I would recommend this to anyone who likes Chicago. I like it so it must be good. HAHA.
Free Music Review: Now that's Chicago Hit: 5 Stars
As a huge fan of the stage production, I was expecting a disaster with the film and soundtrack, but I was very happy to be wrong. Not only did director Rob Marshall stylize the numbers into fantasy sequences, he blends them in seeminglessly. The best effect was the drip, guard step and fingernail tap on the cellbars to lead into 'Cellblock Tango'. The puppet show visualization in 'We Both Reached for the Gun' was the best choreographed/effect laden scene that I have seen in recent memory. All songs were on par with the 1995 stage revival except for John C. Reilly's brilliant agonizing rendition of 'Mr. Cellophane', which was superior. The only disappointment I found was the absence of the bitterly humorous Velma Kelly number, 'I Know a Girl' which would have taken place between the time Roxie says that she's pregnant and the doctor "verifying" it. Other than that it is a brilliant film and soundtrack.
Free Music Review: Incredible score to a rather dull movie Hit: 5 Stars
I love the songs from Chicago. In my opinion, these are the best you can find. the Original recording was British, and in my opinion, sounded odd in some places, like the Cell Block Tango (but still good!)
Catherine and Renee' have great voices, and make a great team. Who knew they could sing! I was blown away. The best song on this album is deffinately Cell block tango, but All that Jazz is amazing, aswell.
As I said, I thought the movie was rather dull. It was very... classy. Classy in that old aged show-biz kind of way. Everyone was on stage, everyone looked glamorous, and everyone's voice was great.
And still, the movie didn't appeal to me. It seemed like everything happened too fast. She shot her lover, ended up in jail, and all that Jazz. Something just didn't seem to fit into place.
But the music makes up for it, nonetheless.
