Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Children of all ages...Like a circus big top there is more going on in this album than can be appreciated at one sitting. The casting is just inspired. While the vocalists are not classically trained broadway stars, their acting skills deliver interpretations on these Kander and Ebb classics that should not be missed. While Catherine Zeta Jones has the full force to deliver on the showstopping numbers she performs, the understated warmth of Renee Zelwegger's performances are amazing(but to hear her open up is to realize this gal can really sing). Richard Gere recreates a style of singing right out of the 20's and delivers it true to form. Razzle Dazzle and We Both reached for the Gun are excellent. But.. the 2 most notable performances are the often underated John C Reily in Mr. Cellophane and Queen Latifah's When you're good to mama. Reily delivers an emotional and soulful rendition, while Latifah is the exact opposite. Over the top, full of inuendo and life, her rendition is rousing and pure joy. What a surprise to hear the pipes that she possesses when given a real piece of music to perform- Queen L- you have a whole new recording career ahead of you. While not Chita Rivera et all.. Chicago mixes the dialogue from the movie (a la Pulp Fiction) into a wonderful new take on classic Kander and Ebb. Bravo
Free Music Review: There's not enough stars in the sky to rate it properly! Hit: 5 Stars
I loved the movie so much that I didn't see any other until it was hard to find in theaters, so it would only be expected for me to buy the soundtrack two days after I saw Chicago the first time. Not too extreme considering a buddy of mine stopped to get it on the way home. If you liked the movie you must get the CD and the movie itself when it is released. I, too, agree that the last two tracks need not have been added, they are just an annoyance if you want to switch the mode of listening to "repeat all". Everything else on the disk is wonderful, though this might also be because I have always liked this type of jazz and music from musicals. I found myself liking the instrumental tracks and sections of other tracks better now that I could hear the outstanding quality of the music. "After Midnight" is the most beautiful thing I've heard in a while, it's almost a shame it was only background for the film (it's the part where Billy tells of the murdering heiress Kitty). There are very, very few minor differences between the content as heard in the movie and the content on the CD. If you were considering buying this go ahead -- if you enjoyed listening to the music in the cinema you must love being able to listen to it any time, or all of the time! Just try to pry that disk out of my stereo! It won't happen!
Free Music Review: And all that jazz! Hit: 5 Stars
All the feeling of the jazz is in this CD. It has one of the best play music in all the time. The soundtrack begins with the amazing theme AND ALL THAT JAZZ, it has a lot of power thanks to Catherine, it's the movie, and of course play, theme; a masterpiece. WHEN YOU'RE GOOD TO MAMA is one of my favorite's songs by Queen Latifah. Next, the CELL BLOCK TANGO, one of the most representative songs of the movie with a marvelous arrangement. ALL I CARE ABOUT, one of my favorites too, is an elegant piece of music. WE BOTH REACHED FOR THE GUN, a magical song with a magnificent Gere.
ROXIE, well this is a beautiful song, and one of the most representative of the movie. RAZZLE DAZZLE, my favorite, it has a lot of power, colorful, magic, it's a masterpiece. NOWADAYS, the last song is a beautiful, elegant, and wonderful ending with a good work of Renee and Catherine.
I MOVE ONE, this song is very special, it was written for the movie; Oscar nominated is the alternative theme of the movie, this song is wonderful: a masterpiece.
The two pieces of score are very good (AFTER MIDNIGHT & ROXIE'S SUITE) but the best is the second.
This CD offers a good jazz, it's the best Chicago album. With the bonus tracks of CLASS, HE HAD IT COMIN', & LOVE IS A CRIME this soundtrack is a jazz jewel.
Free Music Review: CATHERTINE ZETA-JONES & ANASTACIA : REASON ENOUGH TO BUY! Hit: 5 Stars
I have to say that this soundtrack is simply outstanding! I'm not a really big fan of soundtracks at all (let alone one based on a Broadway play). CHICAGO, however, is one exception that I just couldn't miss. While Renee Zellwegger and Richard Gere aren't truly amazing vocalists, Catherine Zeta-Jones is incredible! Her voice is very sexy and powerful! Of the 3 main characters, she is, without a doubt, the most musically blessed. A second career as a singer could be more than possible for her (but I doubt she'll ever travel that road). Queen Latifah (aka Dana Owens) is also a great singer! Mostly known as a hip-hop artist, Queen can definitely sing with the best of them. This is really one of the best surprises on the whole soundtrack. I just love that the entire cd is full of energy from beginning to end. There isn't one part that I would consider boring. Some numbers are a bit slower in tempo than others, but all of the material is really interesting to listen to regardless of the music. All in all, this is one buy I don't regret for a second! (By the way, Anastacia's "Love is a Crime" also makes this cd a great buy. The Editorial Reviewer says it's 'blah,' but I find it to be quite good. Then again, I'm an Anastacia fan. I don't think anything she sings is boring.)
Free Music Review: A Worthy Souvenir Hit: 5 Stars
CHICAGO, the movie, is one of the strongest stage-to-film transitions to come out in a long time. It captures all the joy and Esprit de Corps of the musical. Because the film is so successful on all levels visually, it runs the risk of closer inspection when the CD of the soundtrack is addressed. Were the musical numbers intrinsically excellent or were they just bouyed up by visual manipulations (superb as those manipulations were!)?Now that the CD is out the jury is in! Here is a disc of magic that successfully documents just how fine the cast is in the musical vein. Renee Zellweger is in fine voice and has just the right sound for Roxie the chanteuse. Catherine Zeta-Jones knows how to belt out songs like "All That Jazz" and really sell them. Richard Gere is a major surprise - his 'Razzle Dazzle' sparkles as much in pure vocal form as it did in the wonderfully cinematic form. Queen Latifah is well known for her Rap gifts, but here she sings like a Mae West or Sophie Tucker, completely immersed in her character. John O'Reilly has one of the best bands on the CD with his tender 'Mister Cellophane' number that evokes all the beauty of the old vaudeville theater tunes. The CD is well engineered and a welcome addition to all music lovers' libraries.
