Luis Mejia (son) - Chicago early starts are mainly defined into the boundaries of meaningful, powerful and significant compositions, were their musical aproach is best defined by their popular interest, strongly meaningful songs defined by their way of protest against war and other abussive facts, so their music directions were build upon their earliest powerful and revolutionary spirit. Chicago Transit Authority represented great part of this reality, while having a nowadays unrecognizeable style and way of playing music, while in their marvelous debut album they were trying a unique approach and mainly waiting for the people to comprehend this message throughout music. Chicago II represented a great part of this musical displays, and as their early message was captured, in Chicago II they stand in their highest musical approach, already defined as a recognized band, and this album is the result of such an extremely interested band, as they has stated, at this point of their career they were working 300 days a year, but their still unbreakable spirit lead them to compose, even in the hardest conditions, their greatest masterpiece ever released, Chicago II, as most of the music in the album was composed while flying in airplanes or in road aside motels, and just because of their commitment for their music and their message, this album is just a perfect masterpiece. But Chicago was much more than a bunch of hippies singing anti-war rock songs, oh no, they were a musicaly interested band, which, apart from expressing their own messages through their songs, they could apply at the same time their best and most acclaimed way of playing music, still their messages can be clearly heard in actual times. Anyway, entering more into the album's music, this is certainly their most acclaimed, fantastic, profound and beautiful release of all times, its flawless, meaningful and significant compositions can be clearly recognized, plus the fact that everyone in the band who wanted to write a fragment could do it, so they were no actual tensions in terms of who was going to write the songs, as it can be seen compositions from Pankow, Kath, Lamm, Parazaider and Cetera. The album's first 5 songs are uncompromising introductions to the album's intention, they're very alike with Chicago Transit Authority style, best reflected in the opening Movin' In, later going to the more melodic The Road, and the dramatic, profound but comprehensible Lamm' composition Poem For The People, while In The Country has a certain level of patriotism in its words, but its vocal surprises are the ones which are really valuable, and Wake Up Sunshine stands as a more melodic, uncompromising and joyful composition. All in all, obviously the best composition Chicago ever wrote is Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon, while being a song mainly composed by virtuos trombone player James Pankow, its a 15 minutes long composition. The song was actually not intended to be divided in different fragments or singles, as this fact was a commercial idea of producer James William Guercio, and in commercial terms, this really worked, as some of its singles were extremely "radio friendly", just as singles Make Me Smile, Colour My World and 25 Or 6 To 4, but anyway, this song is much more enjoyable when its heard completely without fragments, although the main problem that it presents is the some times dissonant cohersion between its fragments. Dividing Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon, the first 6 fragments are all composed by James Pankow, when it all starts with the major hit Make Me Smile, an emotional and recognizeable composition with still such a sixties flavour, while the following So Much To Say, So Much To Give starts very good, and just when it seems its about to really start, it starts Anxiety Moment, just as the title expresses it, its anxious atmosphere and chilly instrumentation is fantastic, and after its one minute and a half long, it enters the catchy and relaxing instrumental fragment Virginia Fantasies. The famous Colour My World stays as one of their best and most influenced compositions, with its arpeggio inspired in Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, its one of their deepest, most dramatic song, with Parazaider perfect flute interlude cooling off the song's deep moods, while To Be Free is an uncompromising, light instrumental break, connecting to the recalling instrumental Now More Than Ever, recalling little fragments from Make Me Smile. Later on, Lamm's two compositions come into Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon, being both Fancy Colours, which is a very virtuos but underrated song, starting with an intricate instrumental prelude, later going through the vocal duties, and ending with a total turn into a joyful, enjoyable and moody fragment, best expressed in Paradaizer marvelous flute, and the super hit 25 Or 6 To 4, is a moody, fast paced and rocker song sang by Peter Cetera, but don't make yourself rumors, just as Lamm states "25 Or 6 To 4 is what it is, a song! People trying to find out any type of secret meaning is just funny to me". Ending the masterpiece, it comes the last four fragments composed by Terry Kath, the four of them are serious fully orchestrated instrumentals, while the last fragment, Memories Of Love, is the one with the most potential, specially its dextrous, non electric guitar fancy touches among the song. Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon comes to an end, and while it wasn't any serious meaning in 25 Or 6 To 4, its difficult to ignore the anti Vietnam war hidden lines in It Better End Soon, in which all the four movements are meaningful and potential songs, while the last song, Where Do We Go From Here, is their greatest pop inclinnation, as composed by Peter Cetera, its notorious that Chicago later pop basis was obviously the result of Cetera's compositions, as he later became the front man, in this album he is everything but the frontman. All the seven musicians were at the top of their game in this album, and its musical performance is difficult to find in later Chicago albums. Chicago II is certainly their greatest masterpiece, while its cohersion is still a little bit awkward, its still a difficult album, Chicago pop era fans I'm not sure if they'll like this one, although its such a perfect and beautiful album that it must be in every Chicago fan's collection, still a meaningful release, and their most acclaimed one.
