Free Music Notes for Chicago XXXFree Music Review: A Hidden Gem- This album is really a masterpiece! Hit: 5 Stars
EVERYBODY PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW FROM CHICAGO'S BIGGEST FAN IN DETROIT!!!
Honestly, when I first listened to this record, only 3 songs (Feel, King, and Long Lost Friend) grabbed me at all. I was a little disappointed and thought, Did I wait 15 years for this???
But then I remembered- some of the greatest records never hit me the first listen. Plus I thought, maybe I'm going into this expecting another 18, 19, or 21, or some other record they've done before. Maybe if they're trying something different I should give it a chance. So I took some time to give each track a chance. And my conclusion: This is one of their best albums.
Here's my lowdown on some of the tracks:
FEEL: This song is incredible!!!! Way to go Robert! I love the new sound, very different from anything they've ever done.
KING OF MIGHT HAVE BEEN: AWESOME!!! One of Jason's best songs. This should DEFINITELY be the second single. If marketed right, this can be a huge hit and a huge comeback for Chicago.
CAROLINE: Awesome.
Why Can't We: At first I was thinking this is just "okay," but it's growing on me.
LOVE WILL COME BACK: Great song!!!! This one takes a few listens. I think it could be a good 3rd single, with a video on CMT/GAC with Rascal Flatts (But please release "King" as the 2nd single, guys)
LONG LOST FRIEND: I want this song at my wedding! The verse grabbed me, but it took a few listens to really get into the chorus. I can't stop listening to it. It's right up there with "Will You Still Love Me" as far as I'm concerned.
90 DEGREES: Great song. Classic Lamm. Takes a few listens. Love the breakdown section in the middle- more daring than anything they've released in years.
COME TO ME DO: This one I thought was weird. Robert sounds good on it, but... it took me about 6 listens to really "feel" the groove of this. It's actually a great song.
WHERE WERE YOU: One of the best songs. I also can't get enough of this one.
LOVIN CHAINS: Good soulful Champlin tune. Give it a chance.
Now, here's my 2 cents: (a reply to the naysayers)... It's getting kind of old that every time any artist from the 70's or 80's makes a new album, people come on here and give great albums 1 or 2 stars. It's like, the Stones come out with a new record and people say "But it's not Start Me Up." Def Leppard makes a new album and they say "But it's not Bringin on the Heartbreak." It's time to wake up and realize that the 70's and 80s are gone. We're old now!!! LOL. But, this does not mean this is not a time for great music. Chicago have just released the best album of 2006. If you don't like the order of songs, PUT IT ON SHUFFLE! I think the reason for the order was, they know some people like the ballads, and others like the upbeat stuff. So you have a set of ballads, and a set of more upbeat groovy material. Anyway, I'm tired of all the JASON BASHING going on here! JASON is one of the most talented people on the planet! I hate the comparisons to Peter. Peter is one of the greatest singers in the world (and I'm a huge fan of his), but... as far as I'm concerned, Jason fits better with Chicago and has done more for the group! Jason has been in this band for over 20 years (more time than Peter was), and he has earned the right to be called the "Lead Singer" of this band and to dominate on this album. And though I don't like the comparisons, since someone on here did the comparison I'll respond: I think "King of Might Have Been" is an even BETTER song than Remember the Feeling (although it too is a classic)!!! Jason has something special- it could only be a gift from God. His vocals, bass playing, and songwriting are stellar and have changed my life. Perhaps y'all are just jealous of him? Some of you women out there never cease to amaze me: You complain guys are always jerks. Then along comes a talented, good looking guy who actually has a heart and writes sensitive, caring songs, and you say he's "whining" and "wussy"??? Aaaaauuuugggghhhh. Anyway, about the ballads: If you don't like ballads, why are you listening to Chicago? They've ALWAYS done mushy ballads from the beginning (Think: Questions 67 & 68, Just You N Me, Wishing You Were Here, Colour My World)!!!! They do the ballads well. I happen to like ballads and love songs! And there are some great ones on this record, #30!
