Free Music Review: The Best of Chicago 40th Anniversary Hit: 5 Stars
I GREW UP LISTENING TO CHICAGO AND THIS CD IS FULL OF ALL THE BEST. THEY ARE GREAT!
Free Music Review: Decent attempt at compilation, reccomended only for casual fans Hit: 4 Stars
I think that this album should be better recieved then the current reviews indicate, as the majority of them are from die hard fans - fans who WANT to hear all 7 minutes of 'Beginnings' and all 5 minutes of 'Questions 67 + 68'. Casual fans can probably go without the complete versions of these songs. One other thing I would like to clear up- not every song has time cut off. Only a few that I can tell have anything significant missing (and that is generally the instrumental openings, which to their credit, are always worth hearing) are 'Make Me Smile', ''Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is', among the others mentioned.
This compilation sounds phenominal (although not a whole lot different from the 2002 compilation), and I would highly reccomend it to fans who want to hear the majority of the band's repitoire. I would reccomend the 2002 release, "Only The Beginning" over this, however, to those looking for a more comprehensive look at all of their hits.
To any Chicago fans looking for some fantastic music, Chicago II and Chicago Transit Authority (respectively) provide the best listening experience with any album I've ever listened to.
EDIT: As long as this compilation is priced at $9.99, I'd say this is the best value Chicago compilation that is out there! USe the savings to pick up the songs that are left out or some oddballs.
Free Music Review: 1st Disc AWESOME 70's 2nd Disc MEDIOCRE 80's Hit: 4 Stars
At this price for 30 songs, I figured I couldn't go wrong. I had absolutely none of Chicago's music in my collection so I figured this would be a good place to start
.
(probably like most people have been doing for years now) I've started bypassing the purchase of an entire album and simply buying a few of the songs I like. For this album at 30 songs, and the great price, I figured I could spring for the entire thing. I'm not sorry I did, but really for me, there are only 15 excellent songs on this double disc set.
I won't bore you with the 70's vs. 80's argument, that is the title of this review. Suffice it to say, that in my opinion, the better songs are the older ones. The newer songs (mostly from the 80's+ ) remind me of REO Speedwagon. (eeek)
One of the nicest surprises about ALL the songs, is the quality of the recordings. Remastering always seems like it can vary in quality. (I guess depending on the original format of the original music) I also get varying volume levels when burning new discs to my iTunes library. Let me tell you...these songs are LOUD and CRISP after I burned them to my iTunes library. It's a real TREAT with all the horn work that Chicago does.
After all that, this decent starter collection warrants 4 stars!
