Free Music Review: ABSOLUTE SONIC MAJESTY!!!

With the advent of spring, warmer temperatures and sunshine, I thought it a fitting time to write a review of my second favorite artist album of all time.
Chicane's second concept-album, `Behind the Sun' dropped in late April of 2000 and my musical life and listening experiences were once again forever changed.
The albums somewhat ambient `intro' track (similar in approach to 1997s `Far From the Maddening Crowds ` track, `Early'), simply titled, `Overture', seems to be a bit inspired by the opening track of Michael Mann's `Heat.' Listen closely and you can hear the similarities. But whereas the latter track employed sparse production and conventional orchestration, `Overture' utilizes lush strings and warm pads to the fullest effect by creating one of the most spine-tingling album openers I've ever heard. It is truly one of the best pieces of recorded music I've ever experienced and, to this day, never fails to make me break out in goose bumps.
`Overture' fades out with the sounds of rainfall and waves lapping gently at the shore and is immediately joined by `Low Sun.' This instrumental track features strings, woodwinds and overall `live' vibe to create a Balearic anthem like no other. You can feel the sun on your face while listening to this beautiful, chillout track.
`No Ordinary Morning' features the haunting, beautiful voice of Tracy Ackerman and lends itself perfectly to the mournful lyrics and lush production which conjures imagery of love lost. And while I prefer Chicane tracks sans vocals, `No Ordinary Morning' is one of my top 5 Chicane productions of all time.
Absolute sonic majesty are a few of the words which begin to describe the track which first captured my attention circa summer 1999 and forever made me Chicane faithful. `Saltwater', with its gorgeous vocal arrangement courtesy of Maire Brennan, has been described by many as `Gaelic house.' To me, it is much more than that. This track truly takes me back to the heydays of clubbing, with its driving, 4/4 beat, gorgeous, warm pads and epic arrangement. This is the Chicane track which brought tears to my eyes, the first time I heard it. Sonic majesty indeed...
`Salwater' ends and fades into `Halycon' - another dance floor stormer, replete with breakdowns which feature a plucky, eastern-influenced string arrangement.
`Behind the Sun' reaches its first peak and begins anew with `Autumn tactics', another vocal track sung beautifully by Justine Suissa. The track evokes a feeling of the `end of summer' and features stunning production values, both in terms of vocal and instrumental production. This track is simply stunning, if not a bit melancholy in overall mood and feeling.
`Overlap' is a brief, lovely instrumental little track which conjures feelings reminiscent of the end of something very personal and very heartfelt. Chicane is a master at crafting instrumentals and `Overlap' is yet another impeccable addition to his inimitable production pedigree.
The much vaunted and top 10 radio hit, `Don't Give up' follows next and features a heavily vocoded Bryan Adams. And yes, it works beautifully. The vocal manipulation and keyboard arrangements take most, but not all of the `pop', out of this catchy, driving tune.
The Thrillseekers remix of `Saltwater' follows next and is truly a gorgeous, down-tempo rework of the original. And if the track wasn't labeled as a remix, I would not have been able to distinguish it from any other down-tempo Chicane chillout track; it's that good by comparison.
The albums closing track, `Andromeda', picks up the tempo a final time and harkens back to `The Drive Home' from the first album. This track, with its upbeat tempo and major chords, ends this stellar album on a bright, shining note, leaving the listener wanting more.
`Behind the Sun' is a perfect thing in my universe and, in my opinion, will never be duplicated. It was yet another seminal moment in time and solidified my love of Chicane like nothing he had ever before produced. With its varied tempos, inimitable production prowess and lovely melodies, it continues to receive regular rotation (especially in the summers!) from me, nearly 10 years after its initial release.
