Free Music Review: The Dukes of Stratosphear

Other than that, the songs are great. I think 25 O'Clock is the stronger of the two collections, and 'Your Gold Dress' SHOULD have been a Sixties song. Psonic Psunspot offers shining moments as well, particularly 'Vanishing Girl' and 'Pale and Precious' like others have mentioned. 'You're My Drug' is also one of my firm favourites, along with 'The Affiliated'. I remember going to a Halloween party in 1988 and hearing 'You're My Drug' played on the stereo system. And I remember asking the host, ''WHO IS THIS this is great!!!'' He told me it was The Dukes of Stratosphear who were really XTC, and I STILL didn't go out and buy an album of theirs until a year later, but they had made steady appearances in my ears since 1980! Really odd. Because usually when I like something alot, I just go out and buy it. And it really took about 8 years for me to finally go out and buy an XTC album. much an homage to a time, without stealing from it (as someone else mentioned). There are a lot of bands out there that just take a sound and call it that, and then they're hip and cool, and then abandon it when it doesn't sell the units it used to. The Dukes went into this loving the Sixties and its songs, and paid very honourable tribute, and came up with some really classic songs of their own. Some of these songs belong right up their with the classics of the 60's. Particularly 'Vanishing Girl', 'Pale and Precious', 'Your Gold Dress', 'Bike Ride To The Moon', 'What in the World', 'The Mole From The Ministry' and 'You're My Drug'. Great stuff. But by this point you should expect no less from XTC, whatever they call themselves.
