Free Music Notes for Chocolat: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture (2001 Film)

Free Music Review: Pleasant music from a great little film
Hit: 4 Stars

The musical score for "Chocolat" was so integral to the film that you will smile at remembered scenes every time you play the CD. But the music also stands on its own.

I got the CD because I love the Django Reinhardt "Minor Swing" but I ended up being hugely impressed with the music written by Rachel Portman. She creates a wonderful, magical mood with her wistful melodies. This is a terrific "put something soothing on" CD that I play quite often. And it doesn't hurt to close your eyes sometimes, and see snow whirling around the enchanted town square of Lansquenet, and see Vianne's red cloak billowing in the wind.

Free Music Review: Sinfully Delicious
Hit: 4 Stars

Rachel Portman's "Chocolat" is an exquisitely delicious soundtrack. It perfectly complements Lasse Hallstrom's sensuous movie about temptation, longing, and love. There's the music of Duke Ellington (it's set in post-WW II France) and Django Reinhardt, the famous Gipsy guitarist. The opening theme is an amazing blend of Gipsy and South American music (panpipes) It evokes the character of Vianne, the beautiful chocolatier, the daughter of a French scientist and a Mayan maiden who healed with cacao. "Chocolat" is an irresistible temptation!

Free Music Review: Johnny's Track Swings
Hit: 4 Stars

Did you know the best track on the CD features the virtuoso guitar-playing of none other than Johnny Depp, who plays the romantic character, Roux, in Chocolat? "Minor Swing," which is by far the most popular song on the soundtrack, as well as "Caravan" both show off Depp's little-known talent as a guitar hero. He started out as a musician and "accidentally" became an actor. What a treat to hear him play the guitar so beautifully and to experience a new appreciation for his talents.

Free Music Review: A good score from a good composer
Hit: 4 Stars

While the movie, although pleasant, was a little predictable and cliche, the music is an amazingly subtle work. With a typical Portman piano-based theme, and an even better lilting mysterious wind theme, this is a great listen!

The best tracks are "Vianne Confronts The Comte" and "Passage Of Time", both of which have fun with the scenes they accompany, romping and bouncing in an almost cartoonish yet intriguing way.

Free Music Review: Great movie, some good music.
Hit: 4 Stars

Rachel Portman did a good job of scoring this movie without question. As a stand alone soundtrack though, a lot of the music loses it's luster, BUT, there are three or four tracks that makes this CD a great buy and good listening. My personal favorite is "Vianne Sets Up Shop". "Minor Swing" and the classic "Caravan" are great tracks as well.
