Free Music Review: Rachel Portman puts back what Hollywood takes out
Hit: 5 Stars

One critic described the soundtrack of "Only You" as "oozing lovesick lyricism like cheese from an overstuffed cannoli". Although this gained her a legion of faithful fans who presumably like this kind of thing, Rachel Portman has since spent her time on far more literary endeavors, three of which have gained her academy award nominations ("Cider House Rules", "Chocolat" and "Emma", for which she won in 1996). It seems as if she has earned an almost John Williams-like automatic spot on the nominations list.

In these latter scores it seems as if she has used the book as her primary inspiration and this certainly shows on "Chocolat". Of all these films, this is the one that deviates most from the original text, yet it is one to which the soundtrack remains curiously faithful. Many consider these movies to be "blandifications" of classic novels. Rachel Portman's assured lyricism, increasingly restrained orchestration and beautiful use of woodwind instruments make this a wonderful CD to listen to while reading the book!

Free Music Review: Very good, a perfect blending of multiple styles
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack is one of the many factors that make Chocolat a truely excellent film. Part of the plot of the movie concerns a merging and acceptance of people from different cultural backgrounds. The music supports and contributes to this feel by setting the culteral, mystical, reflective, and lively tones of the film.

The music reflects a blending of different times, places, and people. I'm impressed with just how much the music contributed to an already strong movie -- much more so than any recent movies I've seen.

While the music does bring back great memories of the movie, the CD also stands quite nicely on its own. A peaceful and sometimes lively merging of orchestra, gypsy-style music, with a pinch of Andean/Peruvian flute for a mystical feel.

If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen the movie, I think you may be surprised by exactly how good the story, characters, scenes, and music all fit together and complement each other.

Free Music Review: Playful and intriguing, Portman has done it again!
Hit: 5 Stars

My first run in with music by Rachel Portman was through a movie called Sirens, and the outstanding soundtrack, sadly, was out of print. I was mesmerized by the music, and I was addicted to her amazing style. I own the Oscar Nominated The Cider House Rules, a fabulous soundtrack, and I love Bagger Vance and Emma, but this new track is the tops! With varying styles that are from light jazzy pieces that make you feel like dancing, to gentle instrumentals, Portman has taken the prize again! She captures the playful mystery and romance of the movie in every note, and it's captivating. A must have for all instrumental lovers, you'll be playing it over and over again, and never get tired of it!!

Free Music Review: Perfect Soundtrack - Movie Macth
Hit: 5 Stars

Chocolat is an excelent emotional and pasionate film by itself but Rachel Portman's contribution with the music is to give the movie soul and life. This is one of those cases (other being the English Patient) where music and images come together to provide the viewer(and listener) with a complete sensual experience through the mix of sad and joyful melodies.

The soundtrack's most important achievement is to set the tone for the scenes emotions. In fact just by listening to the music you can experience the film all over again.

Free Music Review: Delightful
Hit: 5 Stars

A WOMAN composer--it's true! The main theme recalls 'Beauty and the Beast' so closely, it must have been intentional. The first and final tracks are, respectively, merry and sensual guitar pieces. The instrumentation, on top of a small orchestra (and guitar), includes some interesting South American flutes, and jazzy violin solos. This CD is a modern, chocolatey (that is to say, sweet as well as a little bit dark) fairy tale. Just do yourself a favour and succumb to its gentle humour and its charm--it's impossible not to.
