Rachel Portman is renowned for her light-hearted, orchestral scores, and Chocolat stands as the pinnacle of her career. If there is one word that irrevocably describes her music, it is "fun." Chocolat is simply a fun score, and all of its predecessors remain that way as well.

This CD is a mixture of Portman's upbeat, playful themes and guitar swing, creating a unique and unrelenting mood that keeps the listener attached from the very first cue. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Score, and that distinction couldn't have been bestowed on a better piece of music.

Portman's themes are always pleasant, and they work to the benefit of the score, returning as though old friends, though I detract a single star for perhaps the album's ability to be too repetitive. Regardless, this score can be appreciated form the first listen to repetitive listens. What makes this an even grander experience is that it is one of only a handful of scores that someone can pop in a player and listen to, from start to finish, without any hesitation or boredom. Portman's skill as a composer frequently attributes this trait to her albums.

All in all, this CD is a must for any film score collector and well worth--MORE--than the price of the album. It's always fun, always lighthearted, and with an ethnic flare that gives the listener a new and unexpected treat. Chocolat: it's as sweet an album as can be.

Free Music Review: Chocolat is Semi-sweet
Hit: 4 Stars

Johnny Depp fans will appreciate his perennial good looks and charm in this film about a mother and daughter who appear in a tranquil French village in the late 1950's and open a chocolaterie at the beginning of Lent, thereby inviting snubs from the townspeople at the behest of the mayor who controls them. Perfection is a must, according to the mayor (Alfred Molina,) and Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her little girl disrupt his bliss by demonstrating to the villagers that they don't necessarily have to obey him. Vianne takes pride in her knack for guessing her customers' favorite chocolates until Roux (Depp) comes on the scene and proves her ability is not always trustworthy. Through a series of events involving Roux, Vianne, and her landlord, Madame Voizin (Judi Dench)the townspeople are taught to relax and that legalism and perfection are not what God expects of people, but it's what's in their hearts that counts...and they all lived happily ever after. The true Christian, however, is left a bit empty with the priest's Easter sermon at the end.

Free Music Review: Beautiful but short
Hit: 4 Stars

Ok I have to admit, after seeing the movie three times I had to buy the book and the soundtrack. Neither let me down, but I have to admit that the score seems too short! It's only 41 minutes long and it left me feeling as if something was missing.

Portman does wonders and indeed each track truly takes one back to the film (my stomach growls each time during the "Chocolate Sauce" track; no lie!). By far the best track is #1, the "Minor Swing". You will want to jump up and dance to this, as I have found myself doing in public while listening to this on my discman!

I have had this disc on constantly, from in my car to in my discman to in my cd player while falling asleep at night. The tracks are beautiful and mysterious, fitting the memory of the movie perfectly. You and your stomach will both agree.
