A few months ago I was fortunate to have heard Marc-Andre Hamelin play
the B minor sonata in Chicago. That was my first time hearing it and
the third movement was so beautiful many people in the audience around
me had tears in their eyes, and so did I. That was such an amazing
experience that I have been in constant pursuit of that feeling ever
since. I now have at least five renditions of the B minor sonata,
(including the version on Hamelin's DVD) and finally, finally!
This is it. This is good stuff.
P.S. I'm listening to the third sonata right now and I wanted to add
that Demidenko's tempo in third movement is slower than Ashkenazy's and
Hamelin's. To me this helps to bring out the beauty of the passages
in that movement and also serves to give a huge driving force to the
fourth movement, but other listeners might not agree.
