Free Music Review: Blue Nile & Alpert-sound alike

The title track is the only track that I'm commenting about(it's also available in a Botti comp). I've heard one other track from this album;that track and most of Botti's other work leave me with that $mooth Jazz blandness. But the title track,featuring the Blue Nile's Paul Buchanan,is amazing and it was a shame that pop radio didn't know what to do with such a fine song. Interesting that Botti's sound is so derivitive of Herb Alpert's solo recordings. The Blue Nile were once an A&M recording act and maybe a real Alpert/Nile pairing might have received some airplay and eventual wide audience for the Blue Nile.

On paper, trumpeter Chris Botti is another smooth jazz heartthrob, a seasoned session veteran stepping out with his own mix of romantic instrumental pop. But Botti brings more care and nuance to his work than that faux category implies, and this seductive collection underlines his deeper intent in its smoky title song, a collaboration with Paul Buchanan's Scottish neo-pop band, The Blue Nile, that is sufficient excuse for entry: Buchanan's fevered yet restrained vocals answer Botti's cool, Miles-wide horn lines in a classic late-night reverie that is the set's standout, but Botti's own wordless pieces sustain the album's suave, finely crafted mood.
