Free Music Review: A Motown Rare-Groove Treasure

Motown's answer to blue-eyed soul legend Dusty Springfield finally gets her due with this excellent 2 cd anthology. Chris Clark was a six-foot beehive blonde-haired beauty who had a seductively soulful voice. She later became a Vice President of Motown film division until 1989, and was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing the screenplay to LADY SINGS THE BLUES.
Clark recorded two albums for Motown: the appropriately-titled SOUL SOUNDS (1967), and the somewhat odd CC RIDES AGAIN (1969). Both albums are represented here along with over 30 juicy from-the-vaults recordings that are just as good or better than the songs that were actually released (i.e. the usual high Motown quality).
The highlights are the underground hit single "Love's Gone Bad", the slinky"Do Right Baby, Do Right" and the delicious cheating song "Can I See You In The Morning". However, there's way more highspots than I can list here.
The only downside to this collection is too many cover songs on the second album (CC RIDES AGAIN), and the interesting liner notes that are hard to read due to the small green print. However, this collection represents underground Motown at its best.
