Free Music Notes for Carry OnFree Music Review: if you like Euphoria Morning, read on... Hit: 5 Starscomparisons to CC's sound with major bands is unfair. His 1st solo album was a sizable departure from Soundgarden after their demise. I have to say that i'm a major vocal/music person. owning Euphoria Morning for 5 years, i've still never sat down & absorbed the lyrics to it. people have said the new album lyrics are lame, but i don't think they're much different than the 1st album 8 years before. Cornell's vocal ability & attack on the songs is what i appreciate the most. Maynard from TOOL/A Perfect Circle is the only singer who can come close to the vocal control/play CC has. Maybe add on Serj Tankian from System of a Down - how much do we care what he sings about? banana terracotta anyone?
If you really like Cornell's voice, it's worth it to pick up this album. i spoke to a fan the other day & we agreed that we'd listen to a song about pooping in your hand if Cornell did the singing/music! You can almost hear it in your head & it makes you smile when you know you'd dig it, at least a little...
the album is book-ended by the 2 coolest songs in my opinion: 'No Such Thing' at the front & the bond theme song he did at the back. the weight varies from song to song on which ones will hit you personally, but there isn't a weak one that stands out to me.
Chris Cornell (& Maynard) is the best thing to come out of the early 90's, & we're so blessed that he's still making music. We lost Layne Staley, so the other shining star to come from Seattle is gone. AIC & Soundgarden are the crux of the long-lasting effects of grunge. NONE of their albums lose their strength as time goes on. GO see Cornell live - you'll hear Soundgarden (1/2) & Audioslave (1/4) songs. Then go see AIC with their new singer, it's a great show & if you close your eyes - it's there. i missed them a few times & i'm grateful to get to hear those songs live.
word,
Free Music Review: great stuff Hit: 4 Starsi thought this was a great album, all the songs r good

Free Music Review: This is Chris Cornell? Hit: 2 StarsI've loved all of Chris's work from Soundgarden to Audioslave. Not only was the music outstanding, but the lyrics were often thoughtful (especially with Audioslave) commentaries on current issues.
I just don't get this effort. It's so weak compared to his past work that I think Chris might really need a good band behind him.
I understand that musicians often want to go in different directions and support that. For instance, Robert Plant has created albums that are outstanding but totally different from his work in Led Zeppelin. However, this direction is just bad. The songs are droning anonymous creations that sound like something thrown together in a few days time. It was terribly hard to listen to the whole album.
I hope Chris does better in the future. This album is beneath his abilities. Here's hoping for a better effort going forward.
Free Music Review: Excellent! Gets inside your head. Hit: 4 StarsIf you're looking for a Soundgarden or Audioslave redux, you're in the wrong place. These songs are full on rock in places (No Such Thing) but gentle and thoughtful material abounds as well. As for the guy behind me at the concert in Seattle who said Chris' solo material was "weak" ...well he'll grow up someday... I hope. Just because it's not loud doesn't mean it isn't good. It's not often that songs get inside my head, and usually it'll be just one from an album - if that - but any number of the songs from this album stick with me. Unusual and visceral images (Killing Birds), melodic phrases and riffs (Silence the Voices), and Chris' stunning vocal ability (everywhere) keep these songs playing in my head even weeks after my last listen, and I'm always rewarded by listening to them again. Who else has the stones to write about a lover stolen by a woman (She'll Never Be Your Man) AND cover a Michael Jackson song (Billie Jean - stunning version - a blues-dirge), and still come off as a rock-n-roll man's man? Buy this album!
Incidentally, buy "Euphoria Morning" also - it's even better (and gentler) than "Carry On." Songwriting is unusual but still accessible, unique melodies and arrangements. I have described it to friends as Robert Plant singing lead for the Beatles, only better. My biggest disappointment at Chris' concert in Seatlle was that he played nothing from this album.
Free Music Review: 3-1/2 stars -- Might be hard to carry on after this Hit: 3 StarsChris Cornell's career seemed to be moving along fine when he was the voice of Soundgarden in the mid-`90s. After he broke away from them, he went the solo route, and although his song "Can't Change Me" got moderate MTV airplay (probably due to its world premiere being broadcast via Making the Video), the album it was on, Euphoria Morning, went absolutely nowhere. But soon he joined up with most of the members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave, a smart move on his part -- in fact, the band's 2005 album Out of Exile was so good that it made me decide that some supergroups DID have staying power.
However, Chris bolted from Audioslave almost immediately after their third album Revelations was released (maybe he heard the rumor about there actually being a Rage reunion?), and he's going solo again with Carry On. But one thing that's noticeable right away is that Chris' singing voice is completely different: it appears that he's trying to pull a Bon Jovi and go for more country-tinged rock (or does anyone remember a band from the `80s called Georgia Satellites?). The problem with this, though, is that it makes his vocal have an acquired taste, especially evidenced by his cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (not bad, but unnecessary).
And the worst song is the FIRST song, "No Such Thing". Actually, the entire song isn't bad, but the chorus is so badly arranged that I was really reaching for the fast-forward button. I also couldn't get into "Killing Birds" or "Poison Eye". In addition, when it comes to romantic tunes, Chris does deliver on "Finally Forever", but "Your Soul Today" is ridiculously corny. ("Can I visit your legs"? Who says that?) And what in the world is "She'll Never Be Your Man" supposed to mean?
Another thing is that when Chris shoots for obligatory we-are-the-world songs, he hits ("Safe and Sound") and misses ("Silence the Voices"). The necessary soundtrack song "You Know My Name" is also tacked on the end of the album for good measure (although I'm surprised it's not a bonus track). In short, while Carry On isn't a terrible album, it's still another one of those albums where I say B.I.F. (Borrow It First).
