Free Music Review: DIVINE HORSEMAN Of The Apocalypse
Hit: 5 Stars

TIME STANDS STILL is the point at which Chris D, monumental and should-be-legendary figure of the Los Angeles underground music scene, transitioned from the aggressive, riff-based punk of the Flesh Eaters into a more grandiose, roots-oriented sound. And he accomplished this without sacrificing many of the elements which make him such a unique and compelling presence. Driving rhythms, subversive Christian iconography (a personal favorite), and especially his howling, doom-laden vocals are all very much a part of this, the first Divine Horsemen album. An actual band had not yet been set, so, on this recording, contributions are made by people from various like-minded bands, including X, the Blasters, Tex And The Horseheads, Green On Red, and the Gun Club. What's amazing is how effectively Chris D uses them to create music that is powerfully evocative of his own apocalyptic intensity. There's a specificity to these songs that's almost cinematic, especially the way
he and Julie Christensen trade vocals as if they're doing dialogue from some great western of the early seventies. Song after song tells the story of a man, himself beset by demons, who tries to save the soul of the troubled woman he loves beyond all reason. Not the most original subject matter, but its done here with a passionate creativity that any filmmaker would be envious of. Indeed, you can feel the heat from the brutal desert these characters have to cross, taste the bad whiskey they drink to forget their tortured pasts.

Often classified as cowpunk, Divine Horsemen was much more than that.
And this intimate epic of an album proves it.
