Free Music Review: Isaak Pulls Pop From Death's Door...
Hit: 5 Stars

Just when I thought Isaak had perhaps peaked forever with Forever Blue -- a suspicion supported by the unevenness of Speak of the Devil -- he comes up with Always Got Tonight and a whole new level of creativity. I have the entire Isaak catalog, and this one is the best of the lot, in my view. Perhaps it's the new producer, taking him to new places, but surely it's also due to the maturity of Isaak and Silvertone et al. Here, they are masters of mood and melody, confidently riding out the hooks like one long luxurious wave. Too often, songs will have instrumentals regardless of need, and they jar the senses like a flat tire. Here, the songs come at you on the half volley and never let up; this is one of those rare hook-laden masterpieces that can be put on and repeated, over and over. There's also a new playfulness that is refreshing. Witness the stripper-friendly "Always Got Tonight," soon to be featured at a nightclub near you, and the lounge cool of "Notice the Ring." Sometimes Isaak can get bogged down in his brooding. This cd is more balanced, indicating an artist with a larger perspective who still feels deeply but not hopelessly. The instrumentation is also a breath of fresh air: pianos and strings add immense depth to the music. It leaves you wondering why he didn't try it before. For instance, with "See You Everywhere" and "Cool Love", Isaak has truly outdone himself. The latter song reminds me of something Rungren or America might have done in their heyday; it has that retro feel and exhibits Isaak singing in a new voice. "See You Everywhere" is the album's shining diamond. I haven't heard anything this well done in a very long time, by anyone. It is Isaak's best song to date, in my view. Buy this CD if only to hear it, especially if you believe pop music may very well be dead. Ultimately, the most appealing virtue of "Alway Got Tonight" is its cinematic power. As much as it calls up memories and images of people you've known and cared about, it also calls up the road, beckoning the listener to travel into the heart of the American myth. Isaak does this better than anyone out there. Perhaps he is the original American boy, after all.

Always Got Tonight Poster

Isaak's first album since his TV success, and first in four years, 'Always Got Tonight', marks a return to form for the singer-songwriter-guitarist with the smoldering retro-pop vibe who has previously earned four gold or platinum albums. Reprise Records.
As the star of his own Showtime TV show, Chris Isaak plays a sly raconteur with perfect comic timing, but on his eighth album, he shows that he is still intent on continuing in the role of melancholy balladeer. With his movie-star good looks, affable personality, and string of celebrity girlfriends, it's increasingly hard to see him in as the perpetual loser in love, despite the convincing likes of "Cool Love" (Love is a flame / I just got burned again") or the mournful "Nothing to Say" ("Nothing to say now / Nothing to do / I feel my heart breaking and it's all because of you"). The real mystery is why his doctor hasn't given him a prescription for Paxil. Isaak momentarily breaks out of his funk with the adventurous and witty "Notice the Ring," which pays cheeky homage to the Contours' "First I Look at the Purse," and the beat-heavy, Beck-like "Always Got Tonight." But Isaak largely seems content to live in the past, strumming the same vintage guitar licks and singing the same sad, sad songs. --Jaan Uhelszki
