Free Music Review: A work of genius
Hit: 5 Stars

I went to a Nickel Creek concert in April, and after the show I went up to Chris and told him that I thought this album ranks up with Strength in Numbers and Bela Fleck's "Drive" as some of the greatest acoustic music ever created. He seemed a bit surprised to hear such high praise, but he told me that was exactly what he was trying to do. Well, he achieved his goal and then some! This is already one of my favorite albums of all time. The playing is astounding (as you would expect based on the musicians), but I find that even more remarkable than the playing are the compositions and complex arrangements that seem to take more from classical music than anything else. This is one CD that every acoustic music fan must own!

Free Music Review: Great tribute to real accustic music and Lord of the Rings
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a huge fannatic of Lord of the Rings and was introduced the song Nicklcreek did called the house of Tom Bombidal by my Wife. I fell in love with it and while surching for more of Nicklecreeks stuff online I found this. The title " Not all Who Wander are Lost " Is exactly the same as the bumper sticker on my car. This title is how Tolkien refers and describes Arigorn in the book. So I had to check it out. What I found is some of the freshest talent I heard since the Dave Matthews Band and/or Cradle of Filth. The whole album moves great from beggining to end. ther are no fillers here just good music. I really hope to hear him improve thease songs live. Chris Thile and Nickle Creek are the best thing to happen to country/bluegrass music since Johnny Cash.

Free Music Review: Simply Incredible
Hit: 5 Stars

Chris Thile has a masterful instrumental album with "Not All Who Wander Are Lost". The musical growth since his last solo album (Stealing Second) is readily apparent. Thile is at his best when he tries to recreate an atmosphere, "Raining at Sunset" is just a stunning track in every sense of that word. Club G.R.O.S.S. is an interesting romp as well; I'd always wondered what jazz mandolin sounded like. Overall, an extraordinary album. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Free Music Review: Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Hit: 2 Stars

OK, first off, if you're in love with that poppy Nickel Creek/Allison Kraus sound, read no further, as our tastes are most likely incompatible. But if you like bluegrass/old time music, and I mean the real stuff, than my opinion may save you from making the same poor investment that I did.

I personally know noone who doesn't watch MTV that likes Nickel Creek, but a bunch of my picker friends kept telling me that this Thile guy was the real deal live, so I decided to check out his solo CD. While it was in the mail, I saw him on a PBS show doing his Nickel Creek thing, which is just embarrissing to watch, but must admit that he just TORE IT UP on a group version of Monroe's Rawhide. That got my hopes up.

But when the CD arrived, my optimism was misplaced. Don't get me wrong...this guy can do just about whatever he wants on the mandolin (barring that elusive "Bill Monroe" sound), but the stuff he puts out is just plain hokey. Reading an earlier review, a guy compared him to a young Mark O'Connor, which in my opinion is an accurate, but not complimentary assessment. Oodles of talent, almost all of which is grossly misplaced. Thile is the acoustic mandolin equivalent of Yngwie Malmstein. Just because you can play something doesn't mean you should.

Save your money, and invest in some Bill Monroe, Roland White, David Grisman, or Jessie McReynolds for that matter. Follow the precedent of Mark O'Connor, and give Thile 5+ years for his taste to refine.
