Chrisette Michele is up for a Grammy this Sunday; "If I have my way" for best female R&B vocal performance. After a few years of singing on some hip hop CDs (Jay Z and Nas to mention a few), she released her debut CD "I am" in June last year. Possessing a smoky bird like voice á la Erykah Badu, and phrasing and style reminiscent of jazz legends of the past, Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald, hers is a jazzy soulful style.
With producers like Salaam Remi, Babyface, John Legend, and the ubiquitous Black Eyed Pea will.i.am at hand, what we get is lush, airy, breezy vintage soul with intelligent lyrics, the afore mentioned Grammy nominated ballad being a prime example. Like that? There are plenty more lovely ballads; "Mr radio", the acoustic "Your joy" (an ode to her dad, produced by Babyface), the tender piano/string laden "Golden" (a song reminiscing the time when commitments were golden - one of my favourites), the folk tinged "Best of me" (very India.Arie, and sung in a lower octave), the piano ballad "Love is you" (arranged by John Legend, similar to his "Ordinary people"), or the inspirational hidden track "I am one" (reaching out to the down and out) alluding to her Gospel roots.
She also knows how to turn up the tempo; the horn peppered "Be ok" (with fantastic harmonies) is jazzy and upbeat, with will.i.am providing a brief and fitting rap. I love this song! Also rocking things (but in a laid back jazzy way) are "Let's rock", "Good girl", and "In this for you" (a fiery chorus with lovely harmonies, set to a sparse bass line).
Whether she wins that Grammy or not (though she sure deserves to), Chrisette is someone to look out for and she's here to stay.

She can sing and she looks good. What a combination. Saw her on the video and I couldn't take my eyes away. Then I listened to the disc and all I can say is, "Girl, God's been good to you."Free Music Review: Wow what a great album

I was worried that this was going to be a one song cd, but it wasn't. Michele's voice is different, but the music is great and she can really sing unlike the stuff you hear on the radio 24 hours a day.
Like a Dream and Mr. Radio are my favorite songs

Chrisette Michele is no stranger to the music scene... she sang back up to india aire & lionel richie, and she sang hooks for jay-z and nas... he soulful debut is the shizznit and refreshing... jill scott and norah jones has someone to watch out for.... her voice is rare and so seductive... she does not sound the same on any of these tracks....
my favourite track on the album is 'best of me'... very pleasing to the ear and soothing... great jam to listen in the car, cruisin.....
another hot track is 'be ok' with will.i.am... this man is just producing hits for everyone and this is a great banger...
'if i had my way' 'like a dream' and 'your joy' are also sum standouts as well...
this cd is very mellow.... if you like jill scott you will love this girl right here....
