Free Music Review: Thumbs down on original cast album "Christine"

Having collected original cast albums and soundtracks for more than 45 years, I consider myself qualified to judge the quality of a score and its recording. "Christine" was a flop back in 1961 in spite of the star quality of its leading lady, Maureen O'Hara. It did receive an orig. cast recording from Columbia, the leading producer of that genre in those days, but because the show disappeared from sight so quickly, it had a limited pressing and has been virtually impossible to find in its vinyl LP version. Therefore, when DRG obtained the rights to release a CD version, my interest was piqued.
OK, action/description, as Amazon suggests: "Christine" ranks as one of the all-time worst scores I've ever heard committed to disc. In terms of melody, lyrics, subject matter and performance, it is mediocre at best. O'Hara is lovely but does not project a real star quality. The less said about this loser, I think, this better. Be forewarned unless you like to collect "schlock."

On paper, Christine boasts some eye-popping attributes: It's the only Broadway musical written by a Nobel Prize winner (Pearl S. Buck), and it marked the debut of film actor Maureen O'Hara on the singing stage. O'Hara had a surprisingly decent voice, but even she couldn't pull off the plot, which was heavily influenced by The King and I (just replace Siam with India, the king with a doctor, and the English woman with one from Ireland). This 1960 show never quite surpasses its curio status, but those with an appreciation for the more obscure reaches of the musical-theater world will get a kick out of it. (Come on: Pearl Buck and Maureen O'Hara!) The operetta-flavored duet "My Little Lost Girl" is particularly nice. --Elisabeth VincentelliBroadway & Vocalists Music CDs
