Free Music Review: Somebody gotta stop this guy ! ! ! !

A huge Chuck Brown fan, one of my biggest complaints is that he's never really managed to capture his live sound (as good as I would like to hear it) on CD... a lot of his CDs just have excerpts of his grooves, you don't get to hear that band of his going off, soloing around the clock and the true concept of go go. I guess it doesn't translate well because the very concept of go go is something you just can't take into a studio or mix down into a 4 minute radio friendly hit track... its non-stop party music...Chuck Brown is the master of ceremonies... the congas sizzle, the drum beats go on NON-STOP as the band segues from groove to groove. The horns might lay out, but the congas never stop... Chuck may rap... and next thing you know, the horns are firing up the groove... lot's of surprizes and the energy builds til you can't take it no more... Talk about "soul injections" - - its a religious experience ! Well I'll tell you this, while I was afraid for the first few minutes of the CD it was going to be yet another rehash of an older CD... by the time Chameleon hit, I was thinking, - - no need for the WIND ME UP, CHUCK chant... Chuck was beyond WINDING 'em up... he was kicking, thrusting, spinning, pulverizing, spittin' 'em out and gettin' his groove on to boot.Some folks may mellow with age... Chuck gets harder and harder... the formula is his and his alone... this CD just happens to sound better than many of his others... there's one great reason... finally, they let him do his thing... and considering that Chuck can take ANYBODY's song and make it his own, that's a DANGEROUS thing... by the way, if 2001 (That'll Work) don't make you wet your pants... ya ain't got no bladder !

Ok, so mymainman chuck is almost 70 and he's still puttin out classics. This is by far the best commercial release by chuck in a live setting. the all-time classics are a set of him and lil benny at the takoma station (1998), and the great 1991 tape at the kilimanjaro club (where juju broke the bass drum on run joe, and improvised on bustin loose)every cut on this cd slams, and all of the guests are up to par except for big tony.

If you love funk with powerful horns and thumping bass, you should get this cd. I bought it two weeks ago and haven't listened to anything else since. Great thing about this disc is that you keep hearing new things each time out. To the untrained ear, the go-go beat may seem monotous, but it's anything but. The level of musicianship is high, and you can really feel the joy of the musicians as they're playing.A classic!

THE INSTRUMENTS USED FOR GO GO MUSIC IS OUTSTANDING. I AM A FORMER RESIDENT OF D.C. I AM NOW LIVING IN SUFFOLK, VA, WHICH TO ME IS BAMMA. ANYWAY, CHUCK BROWN, IS THE ONE TRUE GO GO MICKEY. HE IS THE ORIGINGAL GODFATHER OF GO GO. PEACE OUT.
