Free Music Review: Go-Gone? Wind Me Up Chuck, Please!
Hit: 3 Stars

I want to like this disc so much more than I do! On its face, it's immensely appealing: the godfather of go-go plays the best room in his hometown of DC, where go-go rules supreme. And I bet this was a damn fun show to be at, but on disc it all sounds so thin. I mean give me some bottom end! It's mostly Chuck and drums (guitar, horns, and bass feel so far in the background). Just when you think they're going to push it into overdrive, they fall back into the Chuck and drums show, all at the same tempo. There are some highlights like the cover of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon," but to quote George Clinton, "sounds like it got a 3 on it to me." "People Make the World Go Round" also infuses some much needed energy. In addition, "2001" and musical quotes from such tunes as "Get Up, Stand Up" are nice touches. In fairness, Chuck's in good form, the band is otherwise tight (though I wish the horns were more prominent), and the seamless progression from track to track is very cool. Yes, DC, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Bowie, Landover, and everyone else was in the house that night. Apparently they were wound up more than I.
