Free Music Review: Swan Lake etc. became the commercial swan song of The Church.

The song Swan Lake is one of the most charming, little songs you'll ever hear. Short but very "sweet". On youtube there's a bootleg live version of it. Of course the sound is bad, but you can tell how much "heavier" it sounds in its live incarnation. Which brings me to the only "negative" aspect of Priest = Aura: its production. To my ears this album has always sounded a little too "thin" production-wise. Primarily the drums. I can't help but imagine how P = A (1992) would sound, if the production had sounded more like that of Hologram Of Baal (1998) or the After Everything Now This album (2001) - or even Gold Afternoon Fix (1990). A little more forceful, if you will. Well, at least it isn't plagued by 80's production with a ridiculously heavy and overproduced drum sound. And the decision to keep the production this discreet probably had a lot to do with the "less is more" approach that The Church increasingly subscribed to around this time. Priest = Aura seems to be about subtlety more than any other The Church album pre-1992.
Some call P = A their transitional album from an alternative, pop/rock-oriented sound to a more experimental prog/spacerock sound, but I think it was already beginning to take shape with several of the inexplicably underrated soundscapes on the previous album Gold Afternoon Fix. Songs such as Pharoah, Terra Nova Cain, You're Still Beautiful, Disappointment and Grind are certainly proof hereof.
As for the excellent songs on Priest = Aura, standout tracks include Aura, Ripple, Lustre, Swan Lake, Mistress, Kings, Old Flame (too good to be this short), the instrumental Film, and one of my favorite The Church songs - the gently rolling Paradox with its "wave-like" bass and drum patterns.
The Church sound: Dark, dreamy, eerie, lush, atmospheric, intricate, introspective, spiritual, cryptic, intense, cathartic, melancholic, brooding, hypnotic.
Overall, this is without a doubt one of their most accomplished and satisfying albums. That said, though, I would recommend the album After Everything Now This to someone, who has never listened to an entire album by this wonderful, Australian rock band. It's a more accessible album than P = A, but in no way compromising their complicated, multi-layered sound.
Finally, I'd like to add that I absolutely adore the dark and gloomy sound of Priest = Aura and Gold Afternoon Fix. The Church would be more than welcome to revisit the atmosphere and moods of these two, early 90's masterpieces sometime in the future.
