Free Music Review: It never got any better

Little needs to be added in review of this incomparable performance. Over ten years ago I began my collection of opera and this was an early acquisition. I have never found anything since, including many exquisite rarities, that means more to me personally. All the great singers of recorded history stand unto themselves for what they accomplished, and Olivero simply IS Adriana.
I might add a note of interest. A friend of mine is a friend of Olivero's (at this writing she is 98 years old). He told me what must be little known, that for this performance she was "wearing" stitches from an appendectomy. Little did she worry about splitting them!
For my money, this is the summit of opera as sung drama. The voices, while often astounding to hear, never sever from the thread of the piece. As such this quartet of megastars had no successors - none of them.

The masterpiece of composer Francesco Cilea, "Adriana Lecouvreur" premiered in 1902 with Caruso in the tenor lead. It has remained a standard in Italy, though it is less famous abroad. This is one of its best recordings ever, with the great singing actress Magda Olivero literally living the title role, and a fabulous supporting cast headed by Franco Corelli.
