Free Music Review: Third time's a charm

Rarely am I pleased when a band fundamentally alters its established sound as suddenly and drastically as these guys have with BSN; even rarer is this true when the new "sound" is noticeably more straightforward and accessible than before. Yet, somehow Circa Survive have pulled it off, and quite well at that.

I absolutely fell in love with ON LETTING GO in the spring of 2007. It was a fixture in my car CD player for months, and what kept me coming back was how irresistibly melodic and its wandering, dizzying tunes were. Cuts like "Living Together," "In the Morning and Amazing...," and "Carry Us Away" had a soaring, ethereal quality to them while avoiding the temptation to drift into the self-indulgence and drawn-out ridiculousness some of CS's contemporaries succumb to.

Opener "Strange Terrain," with its infectious yet highly unconventional and dreamy chorus, may give the impression that BSN picks up right where its predecessor left off. This isn't quite true: far from it, really. The only other track fans of early CS will find instantly gratifying is "Glass Arrows," which I will admit might be the album's highlight.

But there's much more to this major-label debut than retreads of JUTURNA and OLG. First single "Get Out" hints at the more refined, radio-ready, melodically-straightforward brand of hard rock that "Through the Desert Alone," "Fever Dreams," and "The Longest Mile" take even farther. On my first couple listens, I was devastated: where were all the swirling melodies and slightly-unconventional chord progressions that had punctuated all my favorite existing Circa tunes? Was the band even worth listening to without them?

It was only after several force-feedings of the entire record that something occurred to me: the bass lines, the percussion, and Anthony Green's vocals have all risen to a whole new level since the last record. Now, a few months later, I recognize that this is a more-than-fair tradeoff for the slightly more reserved and mainstream songwriting. Even closer "Dyed in the Wool," while much tamer-sounding than "Your Friends are Gone," manages to be just as emotive if not more so. It's just subtle and refined in its methodology.

Acoustic, minimalistic numbers "Frozen Creek" and "Spirit of the Stairwell" sort of stick out like sore thumbs in the flow of the album, but surprisingly, I found myself really liking both after awhile. The latter sounds like it could fit right in on the tracklist for Anthony's solo album from a couple years back -- and it would probably be the strongest track, too.

This might not be my favorite album of the year, and I doubt it's going to revolutionize the way you look at alternative or indie rock. But for fans and newcomers alike, it's good stuff; REALLY good stuff. More than anything, I have to commend Green and the gang for keeping things fresh and engaging even while inching towards a more commercial style -- you don't see that too often in modern rock.
