Free Music Review: Absolutely Beautiful Gospel Album

I visited a famed Birmingham hotspot back about 1981 or so. A friend told me about this group, the Front Porch String Band, so I drove over from Atlanta and settled into a seat. I was amazed. The FPSB was a good band with hot picking, good harmonies, etc, but the star was a woman who sang lead and played nice rhythm guitar. She was married to the mandolin player, Larry, and her name was Claire Lynch.
How could someone sing so well, I wondered. In the days before Alison Krauss there were almost no women musicians of note in Bluegrass. "Oh yes", I was told. Claire Lynch was a secret that was spreading. I was told that every so often Emmlou or Dolly would hike down from Nashville to sit in the same chairs we were in - to hear Claire Lynch.
Now more than two decades later (interrupted by a significant chunk of time when Claire decided to leave music to raise a family) - the secret is out. Claire Lynch has won many awards, tours with a band that is blistering hot, and releases a new CD about every other year. This one may be her masterpiece. There's a definite Gospel flavor to it all, including traditional tunes like "Lead Me On" and "He Leadeth Me". There are some that are more like inspirational ballads. The best of these is "Between The Two of Them", which struck Tanya Tucker in a way that she redid it in a recording that doesn't come close to Claire's original. "Between" is about the life spent shared by a man and woman in the fond remembrances of a beloved family member. If you can honestly listen to that song and not be touched I feel sorry for you.
Claire Lynch - always great, no longer a secret. Get it!
