Free Music Review: Courtin' in the kitchen...

I've been a fan of Irish tunes since 1999, when my brother introduced me to a compilation CD of Clancy Bros and Dubliners tunes, the former being showcased far more than the latter, the latter having only four tunes on the CD. Then a teacher of mine who happened to own this CD let me borrow it. If you want to get really technical, a more accurate title for this CD might be Fourteen or so songs about Rebellion and Fourteen or so Pub Songs, but that's hardly catchy, wouldn't you say? Having said that, however, this album features a more or less equal blend of good old drinking tunes (to which I don't actually drink seeing as I don't drink at all), and a liberal sprinkling of both triumphant and more somber rebel tunes. Some particular favorites of mine are Eamon an Chniuic and Portlairge (both of which are sung in Gaelic), and the more somber Boulavogue and The Croppy Boy (mistitled here as The Croppy Box). Of course the Clancies' partner Tommy Makem is featured quite prominently on this CD, lending his distinct baritone to such tracks as The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Nel Flaherty's Drake, Bold Thady Quill, Maid of the Sweet Brown Knowe and Courtin' in the Kitchen. About my only complaint with this CD is that I prefer other arrangements of some of the tunes (Finnegan's Wake comes to mind since it's sung in an almost minor key here), but it's really not enough to warrant subtracting a star. Overall an excellent album that has me interested in trying to learn Gaelic, difficult as that may be these days.
